GOP ready to pounce on vulnerable pol [Kerry D-MA]

Bay State Republicans are circling like vultures around a politically weakened John Kerry, vowing to field a strong challenger that may be able to capitalize on his fractured image and snatch his coveted U.S. Senate seat.

One potential GOP challenger, state Sen. Scott Brown, said last night that he "would consider" a run against Kerry in 2008 and that the senator is ripe for the picking.

"I think he'll get a challenge this time. I don't think he'll get a free ride," Brown (R-Wrentham) said. "His handling of himself during this Iraq situation has been outrageous. He needs to be held accountable. Whether I’m the guy to do it or someone else, I think people are tired of his poor representation."

Wounded by bad press over his "botched" Iraq joke and rock-bottom poll numbers, Kerry opted not to make a run for the Oval Office in 2008, telling his colleagues on the Senate floor yesterday, "This isn't the time for me to mount a presidential campaign."

Taxsachuttus elect a Republican senator? It'd have to be a RINO or hell freezing over or something. But, with their beloved global warming, I guess anything is possible.

I don't care if it is a chafee clone, just to be able to finally put the last nail in the S.O.B.'s coffin would be worth it.

If it was any place but Massachusetts Kerry would be gone. But like Uncle Ted, my bet is as good as any one on here he keeps his seat til he dies.

I hope he can retain his seat in the legislature when he runs. He's as close as we get to a good conservative base for a Republican revival in this sorry state, and his chances against Kerry aren't good. He'd be an excellent candidate nonetheless and might leverage this into a run for governor in 2010.

But if we lose him as a senator, we could be down to 4 Republican senators out of 40.

Hmmm? Kerry will not run for Prez in 2008 against Her Royal Cankleness. (That's what the initials HRC stand for)

Maybe Scott can borrow Kerry's "complete and unabridged" USN discharge files from Hillary.

Putting up a strong challenger with good support is worthwhile, but it's not a good plan to focus too much attention on Kerry; he's out of the '08 presidential race and is yesterday's news. It would be like Da Bears preparing for the Super Bowl by ignoring the Colts and continuing to talk smack about the Saints.

The GOP in Massachusetts is down to about 11.5% of the voting population, and most Independents routinely vote Democrat, so it is pretty hard to imagine how any Republican beats Kerry (who was clearly running - before he wasn't running for President). Perhaps it finally occurred to him that his fellow Democrats no longer wanted him around during Primary season, like the crazy Uncle you no longer invite to Thanksgiving because he insists on assaulting the other guests with his unwanted loud opinions on everything.

Now, Kerry has to "defend" his Senate seat against whatever unfortunate sad sack the tattered remnants of the Mass. Republican Party throws up against the wall. For that dubious "honor", they should at least supply a blindfold and a cigarette. So "Liveshot" will likely be yet another Senator-for-life, just like his corpulent Hyannisport mentor. Teresa must be proud, but if she ever bails on him, well, there are plenty of rich widows out there looking for love with all the wrong faces...

LOL. That was 1979 dude. Get with this century. They are not going to elect a conservative in Taxsachuttus. Ain't gonna happen. This guy might have been elected back then, but not now. That with that leftist's state.

I doubt that any GOP candidate can win a Senate seat in Mass, but I find it interesting that this time around stronger candidates seem to be lining up to run for congress than last cycle.

Cellucci isn't interest in being a senator and couldn't beat Kerry. If he had any interest in running for office again, it would state, not federal.

Weld lost to Kerry in 1996 and has moved on to New York. I don't think he'd run and I don't think that's a loss to Massachusetts.

Our best bet here is for someone like Scott Brown to make a good show in this race and use it to raise his profile for statewide office. Our bench is pathetic and he's just the guy to build it up again.
