ANNAPOLIS -- Former Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele will lead a major Republican fundraising group and start a public affairs consulting firm in Maryland.
Mr. Steele will be the chairman of GOPAC, the national fundraising outfit that former House Speaker Newt Gingrich elevated to national prominence in 1994, and start the Legacy Strategies public affairs firm, he told The Washington Times yesterday.
"I'm really looking forward to it," Mr. Steele said. "It has been a whirlwind challenge. I just finished up four years as lieutenant governor, and I was excited to do it. We'll keep plugging along."
He begins both jobs Feb. 1 and will make a public announcement today.
Mr. Steele also said he likely will write a book about his 30-plus years in politics.
"I've really never shared too much of what it feels like to read words about you in the paper that aren't true, about who has just called you an 'Uncle Tom,' " Mr. Steele said. "I think it speaks to the double standard someone like myself has to live with."
Mr. Steele, 48, was the first black elected statewide in Maryland.
The announcements follow broad speculation about the former U.S. Senate candidate's plans.

I like Steele - but I have to agree with you.
AWESOME! Now maybe GOPAC will get some traction!
Steele has major talent, and this development is good news for conservatives. The RNC passed over a good man.

Vice President Steele in 2008 BUMP!
I was fortunate enough to meet Lt. Gov. Steele last week at a dinner on his first day as a private citizen. I have met a lot of famous people and politicians in my day, and Mr. Steele was among the most impressive. He is truly a star and we have not heard the last from him.
Count me in!
I agree!
Can you imagine what the DemocRATs would do if we ran Michael Steele as our Vice President? Their reaction along with the media would speak volumes.
Good! Steele should have been made RNC Chair. Certainly he has suffered more than any other Republican leader for what he believes. I respect that, as few leaders are willing to take abuse for the sake of their principles.
Steele talked a lot about legacy wealth during his tenure as Lt. Gov. He spoke of the importance of having wealth that no one could take from you;that you could hand down to your descendents, if you so chose. Unfortunately, I didn't hear him talk about it much during his campaign for Senate. It is a good point.
I just received a letter with a bumper sticker that says “Secure our Borders Now!” in the mail from GOPAC asking for donations. The letter says “Your name was given to me as one who in the past has wanted Congress to pass real border security, not amnesty.” I emailed both my senators—Cornyn and Hutchison last week and I was wondering if I got put on the mailing list from that.
Has anyone else received such a letter from this organization? (gopac.org)
I’ve received a GOPAC letter but no bumper sticker.
What’s your take on the organization?
To me, it sounds like a good organization to donate to because they say that “we need to do everything we can to push Congress to secure our borders now.”
Every little bit helps.
I would say it seems much more worthwhile than to donate to the RNC. Lt. Gov. Steele is a great guy, a committed conservative, and his message is on. I would say go for it; I think GOPAC does important work.
