The imam of the Taipei Grand Mosque complained to Taiwan's foreign minister for sending him a greeting card for the Chinese New Year showing four pigs, a newspaper said on Saturday.
After receiving the New Year card, Imam Ma Hsiao-chi pointed out to the Foreign Ministry that the card was offensive to Muslims, the Liberty Times reported. Muslims do not eat pork and regard pigs as unclean animals.
But the ministry defended Foreign Minister Huang Chih-fang's sending out the greeting cards, which were printed because 2007 is the Year of Pig according to the Chinese lunar calendar.
"Sending New Year cards is part of our culture and has nothing to do with religion. Minister Huang sent the cards to people in Taiwan, not to Muslim countries, but we still want to thank Imam Ma for reminding us," the Liberty Times quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Chien-yeh as saying.
The Year of Pig begins on February 18 with the start of the Chinese New Year celebrations, the most important holiday for Chinese all over the world.
Last month, Taiwan's postal monopoly the Chunghwa Post Company Ltd issued the Year of Pig stamp, but warned Taiwanese not to use the stamps when sending letters and parcels to Muslim countries or Muslim friends.
China has also banned images and mention of pigs in television advertisements aired over the lunar new year to avoid offending the country's Muslims.
China's ban also applies to cartoons and traditional paper-cut images of pigs, and to slogans such as "Golden Pig Brings You Fortune!" and "Wish You a Happy Pig Year!"
The Chinese lunar calendar follows the Chinese zodiac, or horoscope, which has a 12-year cycle. Each year is represented by an animal - rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.

(For those who haven't heard the story before, one of Mohammad's followers once asked him what he thought of books. Mohammad replied that to the extent books contradicted the Koran they were evil and had to be destroyed, and to the extent they supported the Koran they were superfluous and not needed.)
Worse, Muslims consider WOMEN to be unclean (good enough to fornicate with, clean their houses, raise their children as well as each one of them....but are NOT CLEAN ENOUGH TO WORSHIP WITH THE MEN IN THE MAIN DINING ROOM as it were but rather, are relagated to the basement of the Mosques.......so, geeeeeeeeeeeeeeez, this religion is begining to seem more like an intolerant, men's club where the rules benefit only the membership that wears pants.
Note to MUSLIMS EVERWHERE................GET OVER IT ALREADY!

exactly and where is NOW when it comes to the way women are treated by the Muslim men. CNN just showed how Muslim women wanted to come and pray in a Mosque and they were not allowed to. And I didn't hear it second hand I saw it on CNN.
I was stunned when I read that the Chinese were going to go along with this. Communist China, that is. They have one heavily Muslim province, but that is hardly enough to be a threat in a country that size. Personally, I think that Communist China is doing it to show it's on the side of the Muzzies in their war against the US.
But it's stunning that they'd simply quash a harmless tradition that is thousands of years old. And what does this mean to everybody born in the Year of the Pig?
Since when do people start complaining about greeting cards they receive. I have received quite a few and never thought to complain. What weird people.

Yes, I caught that, too; it's very surprising to me as well. I think your analysis is a good one. The Chinese want to keep mohammadans focused on the US and not so much on China.
Not sure what the muslim objection is to the depiction of pigs, can someone enlighten us?

These people make a career out of being offended.
The Muslim objection is that it is something done by non-Muslims - and for some reason, they have found that we are easily intimidated on this one. They object to ALL figurative art, so theoretically, any drawing should offend them and probably does, since the ideal Muslim world is dark, gray, without music, without art, and filled with furtive sex with anything but adult women, and daydreams of those 72 raisins.
Sounds delightful, no? Somebody please tell me why we are kowtowing to these insane people and their death cult.

This is nothing but a constantly offended people to look for a reason to be offended again. Here is Arkansas there are lots of mohammedans taking classes at the University of Arkansas whose mascot is a razorback pig.
