During a meeting with Russian foreign minister Igor Ivanov in Tehran, Iran's supreme leader Ali Khamenei was reported as calling on Monday for a cooperation between the two countries to halt US ambitions in the region. "The alliance between the Islamic Republic and the Russian Federation can stop US ambitions to conquer the region," Khamenei was quoted as saying by Iranian state television. Russia and Iran are close commercial allies and Tehran's Bushehr nuclear power plant is being built with Russian technology despite the staunch opposition of the US which fears Iran is trying to build atomic weapons.
"Our two countries can forge a tie able to influence the political and economic choices of the region and halt America's ambition to rule the world," Khamenei said, also suggesting the creation of a joint gas exporting group like Opec based on their command of the world's largest natural gas reserves.
Iran's gas reserves are estimated at over 940 trillion cubic feet while estimates on Russia's reserves range from 1680 trillion to 2360 trillion cubic feet.
World reserves are believed to be between 6100 trillion and 7000 trillion cubic feet.
The UN Security Council approved last month a resolution imposing sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programme if it failed to suspend sensitive nuclear work by 21 February.
Russia, a veto-holding member of the Council, had repeatedly vetoed sanctions and contributed in softening punitive measures in the final resolution draft voted on 23 December.
Russia better watch it. What makes them think their cities are immune from Islamist nukes? I guess it's about the same as in this country. One actually has to go off before their politicians realize who's the real danger. Their shortsighted, hate-America first attitudes are liable to cost thousands, maybe millions of innocent lives. But -- that isn't exactly anything new for the totalitarian-loving left.
REALLY good move. Makes the Russians feel more important and give the a chance stick a thumb in our eye. Bet Putin takes 'em up on it...
Amanajanut's nervous. And I wonder if Russia is dumb enough to actually go along with this piece of crap terrorist?
Just go read what's his names books. He's predicted all this by simply following Ezekiel. I guess thats why we are pussyfooting. We don't want to force their hand in alliance.
Russia might go Muslim in 30 years or less just to go with the majority movement in the world. It would also fit their changing demographics. Hello democrats. Are you listening?

At the same time, and unknown to the Israelis, the Soviet Union mounted a disinformation campaign pushing Egypt to join Syria against Israel. At that time, the Soviets were providing military and economic aid to both Syria and Egypt. On May 13, 1967 a Soviet parliamentary delegation visited Cairo and informed the Egyptian leaders that Israel had concentrated eleven to thirteen brigades along the Syrian border in preparation for an assault within a few days, with the intention of overthrowing the revolutionary Syrian Government. This was a complete fabrication designed by the Soviets to destabilize the Middle East. Similar false information may have been given to Egypt by the Soviets as early as May 2.
The build up and aggressive intent were denied by Israel. UN Secretary General U Thant reported that UNTSO observers on the Syrian border:
... have verified the absence of troop concentrations and absence of noteworthy military movements on both sides of the [Syrian] line.
Nasser probably correctly interpreted the Soviet information as an indication to him that the time was ripe for an attack on Israel and that he had their backing. With the United States deeply distracted by the War in Vietnam, the Soviets had reason to think there would be no US intervention. Nassar then abandoned his former cautious policy and took the lead for new aggression against Israel. Syria and Iraq eagerly joined Egypt's preparations, increasing the momentum toward war.
I would hope Putin wouldn't be stupid enough to agree to this.
Putin has ready outfitted Iran & Syria with enough Russian weapons to trigger regional war in the Middle East.
