PARIS, Jan. 31 President Jacques Chirac has demanded that the United States sign both the Kyoto climate protocol and a future agreement that will take effect when the Kyoto accord runs out in 2012.
He said that he welcomed last weeks State of the Union address in which President Bush described climate change as a serious challenge and acknowledged that a growing number of American politicians now favor emissions cuts.
But he warned that if the United States did not sign the agreements, a carbon tax across Europe on imports from nations that have not signed the Kyoto treaty could be imposed to try to force compliance. The European Union is the largest export market for American goods.
A carbon tax is inevitable, Mr. Chirac said. If it is European, and I believe it will be European, then it will all the same have a certain influence because it means that all the countries that do not accept the minimum obligations will be obliged to pay.

Boycotts are voluntary & are not the best option . A better option is that all French goods coming into the United States need to be inspected for compliance with all US laws regarding purity truth in advertising , labeling requirements & the govt employees that are in charge of those duties are all on vacation this week & will remain occupied with other duties as long as the E.U. carbon tax is threatened.
Tell France to get the Vaseline out and go sit on a flag pole.
These are the same people who made deals with Saddam to take over their oil fields and move their crude in exchange for 75% of the profit for France.
All I can say from the bottom of my heart is "SCREW FRANCE". We need them like food poisoning.
Hey France, wasn't it enough that we saved your ass and protected your ungrateful nation from the commies? Now YOU are a commie and want our money? Go and *@$#%.
I agree China and India are the biggest polluters IMO.
He should be more concerned about French women shaving their legs and arm pits.
That would be unprecedented!
Q. You know what the first thing they teach to French kids in school is?
A. How to stick up their hands and say "I surrender" in German.
Q. You know why they planted trees along the Champs Elysee?
A. Because the Germans prefer to march in the shade.
Were they ever?
Dumbest line I've seen in a long time.
Might as well say "Stop sunrises" or "Stop thunderstorms"!
Are Europeans that stupid?
"Are Europeans that stupid?"
Do you really need an answer to that question?
"Well, then we just just slap an extra $5/bottle tax on French wine."
You misspelled the last word, s/b 'whine'.
Time to park a couple of aircraft carriers off the coast of France...
O'Reilly will be posting the list of French products and holdings in the US soon.
What french for F***K YOU Froggie
I hear this all the time. I wonder how much of that is useful goods?
I suspect not all that much. Who cares if movies and rap music stagnates? Wouldn't hurt me a bit!
I can never forget that when I was at the Paris Auto Show in 1972, a Ford Mustang price tag was $26,000 (when they were selling in the U.S. for around $5k. Guess what? France has been shafting the U.S. with import duties forever!
How much worse could it be and who cares?
I couldn't agree more, F.U French pu$$ies!!
Well put.
