France Tells U.S. to Sign Climate Pacts or Face Tax
NY Times ^ | 2/1/07 | Katrin Bennhold

PARIS, Jan. 31 — President Jacques Chirac has demanded that the United States sign both the Kyoto climate protocol and a future agreement that will take effect when the Kyoto accord runs out in 2012.

He said that he welcomed last week’s State of the Union address in which President Bush described climate change as a “serious challenge” and acknowledged that a growing number of American politicians now favor emissions cuts.

But he warned that if the United States did not sign the agreements, a carbon tax across Europe on imports from nations that have not signed the Kyoto treaty could be imposed to try to force compliance. The European Union is the largest export market for American goods.

“A carbon tax is inevitable,” Mr. Chirac said. “If it is European, and I believe it will be European, then it will all the same have a certain influence because it means that all the countries that do not accept the minimum obligations will be obliged to pay.”

Well, then we just just slap an extra $5/bottle tax on French wine."

Forget a tax- France and all of Europe perceive that all Americans are very rich.

Just refuse all imports of Frence wine, and any other country that gets on this bandwagon.
There is plenty of good wime produced here in America.

The odd thing, from an environmental perspective, these policies make businesses terribly inefficient and halt innovation.

I remember getting on a train when I was in France a couple summers ago, I looked up the tracks and saw a 'line' over the ties going as far as I could see. When the train pulled up, I realized that their toilets dump straight to the ground.

Hard to take their 'commitments' seriously.

Let us not forget that we PAY RENT for the American cemetery in Normandy. We all know that they would be doing the goose step if it wasn't for the thousands of Americans dyeing for them. As Patton said, "I would rather have a French Army in front of me than behind me". By the way, my grandmother was born in France.

Well, then we just just slap an extra $5/bottle tax on French wine.

Whatever ... won't affect me in the slightest. I drink wine from the United States, Spain, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Argentina, South Africa.

One country is prominently NOT in that list ... whaddaya think of that, Jacques?

This dude at least has some brass nuts trying to stick us with an import tax. Maybe we can reciprocate with a nice old fashioned TRADE WAR.

I know, we just pass additional landing fees for all Airbus platforms landing in the US from non-US carriers.

We just just nuke the French and get the damn frogs out of our hair.
