Baltimore, Md. -- Mitt Romney said today he would name judges in the mold of Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justice Samuel Alito "if I am lucky enough" to become President and be able to appoint federal jurists.
At a press briefing following his luncheon address to the Republican Study Committee retreat here, the former Massachusetts governor and '08 Republican presidential hopeful said that the two Supreme Court appointments made by George W. Bush were "exactly spot on" and he would name judges like Roberts and Alito.
His criterion for naming federal judges, Romney added, would be judges who "follow the Constitution, and not depart from it."

With each passing day, Romney looks better and better among an otherwise deadpan GOP hopeful gathering.

If nothing else, this issueis worth the upcoming fight. We absolutely have to pick a nominee who respects the Bill of Rights and the Constitution as is and will appoint Judicial nominees who do as well.

Roberts and Alito I like.
But I hope we can do better than Romney in 2008.

Many here have claimed that Giuliani has "promised" to appoint "strict constructionist" judges in the mold of Alito and Roberts. Yet, they've failed to produce a quote from Giuliani where he actually made that promise. All they can point to is quotes where he says that Alito and Roberts were "colleagues" of his at the justice department and that Bush fulfilled HIS promises in appointing them.
At least Romney has now actually come out and promised to appoint justices like Alito and Roberts and to do it based upon their view of the Constitution.

At the NRO speech, Romney included Scalia and Thomas in his examples of the type of Justices he would appoint.

I don't want to bring 'Mormon' anything back into this debate, but the link below comes straight from Latter day Saint scripture.
Link
It was adopted August 17,1835.

You mean "flip floppy" on abortion like Ronald Reagan was?
To: Spiff
More than that, Spiff.
Look at Rudy's actual record on judges. I really wish someone would actually post that information sometime.
He also praised Darth Vader Ginsberg.
In an interview, he once said that appointing a SCOTUS justice who would uphold Roe vs. Wade wasn't the "top priority." Upon watching this interview, I find it impossible for anyone to get the idea that it wouldn't be a high priority - though not the "top" one.
In a 2000 interview on This Week with Cokie Roberts and Sam Donaldson, he called Roe vs. Wade "good law." Think he's out to appoint judges that will apply what he believes to be bad law on one of the most critical judicial issues today?
Those who think we'd be okay because Rudy would give us nothing but the judges we want need to look at his history on judges, his views on key judicial issues, and the amount of judges (not JUST SCOTUS Justices) that he would appoint as President.
There is a great danger there that we'd be stuck with a long streak of vary bad judges, for a minimum of eight years when you think about it. Because in 2012, we'd get Rudy or a Democrat again in that scenario - so we'd be guaranteed eight years of bad appointments or not-very-good appointments.

sure hope the gun grabber doesn't get elected.
Romney will say whatever it takes to get elected. He has no core values. He's a freaking RINO weatherman. His opinion changes with the wind.

I didn't mention that the only real reason why I tend to refrain, and want to refrain from it is because wholly ignorant and sometimes hateful people go around flinging outright lies and false accusations at the religion itself.
If it stays on the level, I have no problem with it.
I am a realist. People are going to wonder and ask questions about Mormons, so being one, rather than run away, I should participate.
I presented my reluctance and reasons for posting that for the above mentioned reasons.
I hope you like it, because if you don't you can stick it.

It amazes me that people go on about the Mormon, the bigger question to me is Will America elect a Muslim (ie Obama). By the way, is ObamaSunni, Shiite, or Wahabi lineage. Excuse my spelling

With a Democratic Senate, judges like Roberts and Alito cannot be confirmed.
What difference does it make who the president appoints?
To: zarf
I agree, and he can run with a Newt Gingrich, or (my personal favorite) Michael Steele to beef up his conservative credentials.
