(AgapePress) -- A Texas pro-family group says Governor Rick Perry's executive order mandating HPV shots for schoolgirls entering sixth-grade not only usurps the authority of the State Legislature, but also the rights of parents. In addition, the American College of Pediatricians has recommended against the vaccine for young girls.
A conservative group in Texas is raising strong objections to Republican Governor Rick Perry's executive order mandating HPV shots for 11- and 12-year-old female students.
On Friday, Governor Perry signed an order that requires all Texas schoolgirls entering sixth grade to get Gardasil, Merck & Company's new vaccine against the Human Papilloma Virus, beginning in the fall of 2008. Perry says the vaccine gives Texas "an incredible opportunity to effectively target and prevent cervical cancer."
Perry's office contacted Texas Eagle Forum president Cathie Adams Wednesday and urged her to support the vaccination requirement, but she vowed to do everything in her power to defeat it. Adams explains her refusal. "He's replacing parents' rights with state's rights," she comments. "He's also usurping the authority of the State Legislature."
And there's more, says the Texas Eagle Forum leader. "We have a strong voice that has already said this is not a good vaccine for little girls," she says; "it's the American College of Pediatricians, who strongly opposes requiring students to have the HPV vaccine." Governor Perry, who in the past has received strong backing from conservatives because of his opposition to abortion and embryonic stem-cell research, says the cervical cancer vaccine is no different from the one that protects children against polio. But Adams notes there is no crisis, noting cervical cancer deaths in American women have dropped by 74 percent due to routine pap smears.

very astute post
I'm not familiar with the ACP. Only the AAP.
Why did the ACP stand up? Why aren't those doctors just a part of the AAP? Difference of beliefs?
I don't expect you to necessarily know the answer to these questions. Just curious if anyone knows.
bttt
Let's work to get this SOB impeached...I can't stand the site of that man on the TV news...he's a Bill Clinton in Republican garb.
I'm with you...let's get this started....
Nice try but obviously not very effective. If I had a dollar for every nice girl from a good family who had come in pregnant or with VD, I'd be long retired in someplace warm year round.
If I had a dollar for every girl from a bad family or a nice family who did not get pregnant( you do mean out of wedlock or do you consider pregnancy in and of itself a mark of shame?) or did not get VD, I would be far richer than you would ever be.
I can't believe a governor in any state would mandate a vaccine like this, bypassing the legislature and the public. Sounds to me like he's in bed with Merck. Very bad for both the gov and Merck.
You are right, if you are not in a high-risk group for contracting HPV, then you don't need the vaccine. I hate those "one less" commercials on TV, with the young girls talking about the vaccine. I mean, it's like Merck is saying, "Look, these cute and innocent little girls will be having sex soon, so they need to be vaccinated!" Yuck!
Not to mention, should it technically be "one fewer"?
I'm not sure I'm against it if there's an opt-out. I just wonder why they aren't suggesting quarantine for AIDS carriers, too.Isn't that more of a 'public health problem' ?
The vaccination gives life long protection. You're not suggesting that kids remain virgins... in perpetuity? If your kids will EVER have sex in their lives, they should probably get the HPV vaccine.
Is this guy really a conservative. He's more like an oily snakeoil salesman.
If it is so important, then why let people opt their children out? Most parents will get a note from the school saying that their daughter needs a shot and will comply with no questions asked. They usually don't tell you that you can opt out, you have to find that out by yourself.
Q: Why do it by executive order?
A: To avoid public debate and defy the wishes of the people.
At over $300 a shot, and the vaccinations needing to be readministered every 3 or so years, think of the money that Merck stands to make from every female student in the state of Texas.
Actually, that is a very wrong statement.
You can get it if your partner has had other partners and caught the virus. You can get it if your mother passed it to you in child birth.
I am not for making this vaccine mandatory (especially for young girls), but don't make false claims about how to get HPV.
