City Commision: Geno’s “speak English” sign discriminatory

The highly charged dispute over the speak-English sign at Geno's Steaks is about to heat up.

The Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations notified Geno's owner Joey Vento this week that it has found probable cause that his sign urging patrons to order in English is discriminatory. The next step is to schedule a hearing to settle the dispute or to escalate the charges against the owner of the South Philadelphia sandwich stand.

Vento, who argues that the sign expresses opinions protected by the First Amendment, has enlisted the support of the Southeastern Legal Foundation, a conservative public interest law firm in Atlanta that last year won a settlement for an Ohio bar owner who faced similar charges

Geno should learn Italian, and demand his hearing be held in that language.

What is it the City Of Philadelphia finds "discriminatory" about speaking English? Its our national language!

"Human Relations Commission" is no different than any other entity out there that wants to sue someone. Their...ahem.."findings for probable cause", if thats the way they wanna put it, is a joke. Isn't it like saying "I have 'findings' for probable casue that my next door neighbor is on my property line, so I'll sue.

Unlike Canada, we don't need any freakin' "Human Relations Commission" in this country, becasue we have the U.S. Constitution. Where the hell did all these things pop up?? What are they, the local ACLU with different colored neckties?"

This is about making the shop owner "Pay the PC price" If you dare to question the PC police when told what to do.

The law does not mater, if you stand up for your rights you will pay with your time and money.

The worse part is there is no down side for the lawyers. They will lose the case but still get paid.

It’s a shakedown like the mobsters use to do, expect it’s the liberals.

The is no fundamental right for others to force you not to speak your own language at the business you own.

There's no requirement to be able to understand a different language, either. Perhaps it should be argued as a statement of fact, as opposed to discrimination.

He should hire a lawyer to present his case in some obscure language like Navajo. When the chairman of the commission interrupts and orders him to "speak English" -- case closed. If he doesn't get interrupted with such an order, he should continue to stare straight at the chairman, ask qustions in Navajo, and make hand gestures like he is expecting an answer.

"A lot hinges on perception," said W. Nick Taliaferro, executive director of the (Human Relations) commission.

Ah yes. A mainstay of Liberal Democrat principle:

Perception.

Vento was hanging-tough in a TV interview today, saying he wasn't going to remove the sign and making an excellent case that if his customers didn't speak English they were likely to be unable to order exactly what they wanted from his stand and might well get something they didn't actually want - the government's taking in much too much tax money if they have funds to spend on foolish crusades like this........
