Family mourns former Duke lacrosse player killed in Iraq

MANHASSET, N.Y. - Jimmy Regan followed a calling to the military, becoming a U.S. Army Ranger and serving double tours of duty in both Afghanistan and Iraq, earning a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and several other medals.

Mourners gathered at the Regan home in Manhasset on Sunday to remember the 26-year-old, former member of the Duke University lacrosse team, who was killed in combat last week in Iraq.

Regan's fiancee, Mary McHugh, told Newsday that the couple planned to marry in 2008, after Regan's stint with the army ended. They hoped to move to the Chicago area, closer to her family. She said Regan hoped to become a social studies teacher and coach lacrosse.

Regan was the second former Duke athlete to die in combat. Former swimmer and baseball player Marine Lt. Matthew Lynch died in 2004 in Iraq.

Regan played lacrosse from 1999 to 2002 and ended his career with 22 goals and four assists. He played on two Atlantic Coast Conference championship teams and in four NCAA tournaments.

Cpl. Thomas Saba, 30, a marine born and raised on Staten Island, also was killed in Iraq last week when his CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter went down.

More DukeLAX stories:

Police Investigate Alleged Assault of Duke Student

Durham — Durham police are investigating the alleged sexual assault of a Duke University student at an off-campus party early Sunday morning.

According to investigators, the 18-year-old female told officers she was at the party in the 400 block of Gattis Street around 3 a.m. when she was allegedly raped in the bathroom. There were at least 50 people at the party at the time, police said.

A neighbor told WRAL that Duke and Durham police broke up the party around the same time as the alleged attack. Sources tell WRAL both drugs and possibly a gun were found inside the home by authorities.

Shut Up and Teach?: Faculty and Public Issues
Pedro Lasch, Wahneema Lubiano, Mark Anthony Neal, Diane Nelson, Charlie Piot, Maurice Wallace
Against a current of criticism and attempts at intimidation directed at faculty who comment on larger social and political issues, and following the events of last spring, this forum addresses connections between faculty interests and local, national, and international politics. *Shut Up and Teach?* is both quotation and revision of the recently released Dixie Chicks\\\' film title (*Shut Up and Sing*) – their response to a campaign of intimidation directed at them for criticizing George Bush. *Shut Up and Teach?* is our way of questioning what it is that we think faculty are being asked to do. I think the judge here should send Mike Nifong over to Iraq to serve his time. He would qualify under the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy.

I'll bet the farm that former Duke Lacrosse players in general have a magnificent track record of accomplishment, patriotism and selfless dedication.

Precisely the reason that the democrat party hacks in North Carolina went after the Duke Lacrosse team.

Time for the Duke campus to relocate to an non-democrat party run area of N.C.

Cpl. Thomas Saba, 30, a marine born and raised on Staten Island, also was killed in Iraq last week when his CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter went down.

And this has to do with the article how?

Somehow, I don't think it was Saba's helicopter. I suspect he was just riding in it.

I think the fact that the Saba was also from the same general vicinity is why the included it in the article. And as far as the Sea Knight being "his", I suppose it is grammatically incorrect, but is that really all you took from the article?

I noticed it, but considering the article relates to two fallen American men, I decided it was a hair I was unwilling to split.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of these two men. I pray for their families and for the remainder of the soldiers and Marines in their respective units.

And this has to do with the article how?

Must be Duke's close proximity to Staten Island.

For your edification:

No man is an island, entire of itself...any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

If he was the crew chief he may have considered it his. Corporals are sometimes crew chiefs on coptors.

The genitive is correct, it denotes a use or relationship. My English teachers would have had you by the ear. (No, I didn't own them.)

The inclusion of Cpl. Saba's death adds depth and perspective to the story. The relationship being the proximity in time and distance.

And you are an ass for bringing up either point on this thread.

There were several Marines killed in that crash. I can understand why a poster would question the mention of only one of them. Particularly if he wasn't from the same geographical area as the subject of the article.
