Reminds me of one of the first anti war protests in Tucson uh, back in the day, I was still in hi school.
We took the day to go watch the hippies in downtown Tucson. Like a visit to the zoo, if you know what I mean. Not much of a protest, they walked around downtown waving signs and such. Later they would attack the draft board and burn things.
Then it happened.
A group of the protesters spotted the flag in Armory Park, someone in the crowd shouted tear it down.
As the crowd surged toward the flagpole, a single man walked to the front of the pole.
He didnt stand too straight, something seemed to be wrong with his legs. At any rate, he shouted at the group to stop.
The standard F* you, whatta you gonna do catcalls started.
The man made a simple statement
First one you SOBs touch this flag and Ill kill you where you stand as God is my witness
Things got quiet, then some loud mouth chimed in Ya, well there are more of us than you so what
The lonely mans answer, pointing at the loudmouth You want to be the first to die? He then pointed at several others :YOU? YOU? YOU?
Things got silent. Nobody doubted for an instant the man meant exactly what he said he seemed to radiate some kind of deadly vibe it scared the crap out of me and I was barely within a stones throw. I thought to myself, "Man any second this cat is going to rips out someones throat
."
The hippies started shuffling their feet and group broke up and left the park. Soon after, the single man left. I tried to get a name or something - the best I could do was that the guy was a Viet Vet, who lost one or both legs in 66 or 67 to a booby trap. Rumor had it the fellow was a Green Beret or a Marine, couldnt pin it down.
Today, of course, he would be arrested for inciting a riot or making terrorist threats.
I remain convinced to this day, the first of that crowd to touch the flag pole would have died on the spot.
Lesson learn for me there are no dangerous weapons only dangerous people.
Peaceful protest does have a place, destruction of property does not not.
