I don't watch racing that much but it seems to me if there was not going to be ANOTHER lap where the cars in the lead could go back around and hit anything that they should not have thrown a yellow. The race was over.

>I already get grief from my friends for watching races.<

Time to change friends and get some NASCAR fans in the fold.

They make it up as they go.

Rules are, well, whatever they decide they are at the time.

Sorry, Mark, you were up against the Kenseth. Tough, old man.

Very disappointing finish. Disappointing application of whatever the rules are. Kinda hard to obey the rules when they vary instantaneously. Sad.

Nascar has become WWE. I can't in good conscience think otherwise any longer.

I repeat.

ESPN did not show the wreck..

Who gives a rats a$$ about Espn?

I was watching the in car stuff...rewind...watch again...rewind...watch it again.

Even the network showed it again, and again.

Too bad, so sad that you missed the real coverage. A bit late, for you, to be jumping on any band wagon and start yelling about it.

The wreck happenend well behind the leaders, would have made no difference at all.

>Or, you could just not throw the yellow and hope nobody dies with carnage all over the track.<

The rule used to be that you raced to the finish line no matter what was happening.

A questions for the NASCAR historians????

Is this the first time someone crossed the finish line upsidedown at the Daytona 500? That was unreal.

I'm pretty sure Elliott Sadler did once and I bet there's others.

From Jayski (just posted):

# Harvick wins Daytona 500: #29-Kevin Harvick won the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway for his 1st ever Daytona 500 win on the 6 year anniversary of Dale Earnhardt's death. It was the 2nd Daytona 500 win for car owner Richard Childress, who won in 1998 with Earnhardt. Harvick is the 31st driver to win the Daytona 500 in 49 races. With a green-white-checker finished after a wreck on lap 196. Martin was leading when the green-white-checker flew and was holding off the field until #5-Busch got loose and caused a large wreck at the very end. NASCAR chose not to throw a caution and let Martin and Harvick race to the start-finish line, with Harvick nipping Martin by 2/1000ths of a second. Martin held onto 2nd followed by #31-Burton, #09-Wallace, #6-Ragan [the highest finishing rookie], #19-Sadler, #9-Kahne, #38-Gilliland [pole sitter], #13-Nemechek and #40-Stremme. Harvick had also won the Busch race Saturday, becoming the 4th driver to win both races [Bobby Allison 1988, Darrell Waltrip 1989, Dale Earnhardt Jr 2004]. #2-Kurt Busch led the most laps with 95, but while running 2nd, got into a wreck with then leader #20-Tony Stewart, ending both of their days. #07-Clint Bowyer had a wild ride on the final lap wreck, crossing the s/f line on his roof, the car turned back over, caught fire and Bowyer got out ok. NOTE: These results are UNOFFICIAL and because of the wreck, they could change. There were 6 cautions for 26 laps [and approx a 15 minute red flag during the 6th and final caution] and 9 drivers lead the race with 13 lead changes.(2-18-2007)

WWE Indeed!

how can you say they didn't hold the yellow?

After further review.....you are correct. They did seem a bit slow, as compared to other races.

Man, I don't even want to go here.....where were they in the scoring loops.....

WTF.....fits the rest of the week at Daytona.

Jr's Race Report.............

“We struggled today, and we didn’t have a car that could really challenge at the front. We didn’t bring the right bullet to the fight. We didn’t have the speed like we used to here, but I can’t blame it all on the car. Late in the race, everybody was three-wide and I couldn’t seem to make the right moves. I was indecisive, and the guys that were decisive were passing me. I seemed to pick a line and then it wouldn’t move. This is a 500-mile race, but the first 400 miles are almost an after-thought. You know it’s going to get wild at the end, so you try to do things that will get you to the front. But, when you’re boxed-in by traffic, you can only do so much.”

Best Radio Chatter:

Dale Jr. was unusually quiet through the first 75 percent of the race, but had some of his usual verbal gems as the race neared its conclusion.

Steve Hmiel (spotter): (on lap 153, when leader Tony Stewart was taken out in a hard crash.) “Spin in front of ya!!! The track is blocked! Go to the outside! Go to the outside!”

Dale Jr: (slowing down amidst very heavy smoke) “Am I OK? Where do I go?”

Hmiel: “You’re OK. Go ahead.”

Dale Jr.: (after a long pause to catch his breath): “Alrighty… it’s pretty much anybody’s race now… The car is good, but it’s tight off the corners a bit. We can undo the changes we made.”

Tony Eury Jr.: “10-4.”

Dale Jr: (watching replays on the large NextelVision screens in the infield): “He wrecked him, huh?”

Hmiel: “Yeah. But Tony got loose and it looked like (Kurt) Busch got into his rear quarter-panel.”

Dale Jr.: “Yeah- Tony was really loose earlier in the race when we were running together. But not as loose as me – cuz I’m THE MAN!” (loud laughs in Bud pit area…) Did Tony get out alright?”

Hmiel: “Yes sir.”

Glad to know your feelings about something you are not that involved with all that much.

I presumed that people like yourself that watch NASCAR are your basic car nuts like I am. My first car was a Chevy with a large block engine. It would take me some time to count all the cars I've owned since then. I love car shows, have friends that are in to making their Ford's and Chevy's go faster, buddies with Ferrari's and Porsches, friends that build hot rods, etc. Usually when you are around folks that are in to automobiles or on forums and whatnot you can post something like I did and not have to worry about someone being a jerk.

I apologize for being a butt.

BUT, I would never be so bold as to butt into an F1 thread, for example, and give the, "well, they should have done this...or done that...

I don't know squat about F1 racing. And I would not pretend to.

Especially with the lead off of, "I've never watched much ...but I think...."

Know what I'm saying?
