Bank Blasted For Offering Credit Cards To Illegals
Charlotte News & Observer ^ | Feb 18, 2007 | Rick Rothacker

A coalition of groups that advocate for tighter U.S. borders has launched a boycott against Bank of America Corp. because of a new credit card that could be used by illegal immigrants. The National Illegal Immigration Boycott Coalition is asking people to close their accounts and sign an online petition at www.bankofamericaboycott.com. Organizer William Gheen, president of Raleigh-based Americans for Legal Immigration PAC, also argues bank officials should face federal charges for "aiding and abetting" illegal immigrants.

Better idea - thousands of persons with perfectly legal Social Security numbers should apply to Bank of America, but refuse to give the credit card people their number.

Once this principle is established, Bank of America cannot legitimately ask ANYBODY for an SS number.

Isn't there a law against 'aiding and abbetting'someone to break the law?

I think someone pointed out before that the real difference with this card is that they simply do not require your social security number. While most of us including myself have been lulled into using it as personal identification ("Your papers, please, Herr Caipira!") This program does not, and it is actually more of a valid program since SS numbers were initially designed to track earnings and such.

The very nature of the creation of the SS numbers in 1935 was to track people's earning of gubbamint cheese in work programs at the end of the depression era.

Of course socialsts have jumped all over it as the driving factor in tracking peasants and their actions.

The problem that I do see with the card is that they will literally never make any money unless they pin some sort of liability to the use of the card. A sponser, perhaps or someone they can actually track.

BOA will probably make up for by "accidentally" overcharging every one of their legitamate bank accounts and hope no one notices. From what I hear from complaints, that's a normal part of their business model.

Better think again.

They charge money up front and a high interest rate if you don't provide them with a social security number when you open the account.

"BOA will probably make up for by "accidentally" overcharging"

Right. And then it won't be found out until ten years later when the corporate leaders will have left for other jobs. I mean, who is illegal emigre Carlos going to call about being illegal charges on his card? INS? ha ha.

There is such a law. There is no one to enforce it. The problem with this situation is the sheep dogs (politicians) that are supposed to be protecting the flock (citizens) are aiding and abetting the wolves.

Even a stupid person can see the benefit of depositing 50 bucks in a checking account, leaving it alone for 3 months for the opportunity of getting a credit card with a minimum of $5000 credit... Run it to the limit and bail out...create a "new" identity and starting all over again....

It's done all the time...
Many of our legal and illegal residents work the scam.

The only problem with a bank not hsving an SSN tied to an account is that there is no way for the bank to properly report and taxable or tax-deduction activity to the IRS. There should be some kind of penalty tied to that.

I can't believe this. People are blaming a bank for going after money? That's capitalism folks, live with it! Wanna fix the immigration problem, then fix it. Stop bashing a bank for doing its job.

It sure would save you a bunch on taxes, and your children could attend any college in the US without worrying about having to pay out-of-state tuition.

It is also a way for terrorists to stash their money without it being traced.

Good that this is being brought to light. However, many fail to realize that there are many many banks commiting INS violations that may be subject to RICO racqueteering charges, including Wells Fargo and our very own Federal Reserve Bank.

If the Federal Reserve continues to get away with this, banks througout the country will follow suit.
