I would think the biggest danger from lunch boxes would be contact with food on the inside (things like apples are often carried loose, and the peel is eaten with the rest of the fruit).

When I was young, lunch boxes were made out of pure lead, and they didn't harm us.

I just asked my 6th grade son if anyone he knew even used these and he said no. He said most kids buy lunch. He and his brother are brown-baggers.
