Changing the view from Hoboken. (Vanity)

I guess it was inevitable; the time for change had come. America's most defining moment was created on a sunny clear September day when the view from Hoboken changed forever. Did you all forget?

There was a commission of great political thinkers who met to determine how and why. Some said "We failed to imagine the threat", others said this was only the beginning and that we could expect much grander attacks.

For example, if we were united in political purpose before 9-11-01 we may have been able to see the danger coming. Instead we mused over definitions of the meanings of words like IS and trumpeted political triumph over a President's indiscretions.

At first we acted in unity, with purpose and courage a leader stood in the ashes of despair and holding liberty's light for the world to see he proclaimed that "those who did this to us, will hear from us soon" we learned the lesson and we were united, briefly.

So what happened? Was it really politically necessary to divide the nation? Should we have allowed Saddam Hussein to escape our grasp as we had allowed Bin Laden to do in the years before 9-11? Can anyone say with certainty that Saddam, emboldened by the successes of UBL on 911, would not have recruited terrorists to conduct suicide missions in America? How many American citizens are alive today because of the lesson of unity?

Today our Congress loses focus; political wedge issues have divided the country, the President over reaches in his quest to ensure that we are safe. We have forgotten the lesson, we remain divided.

America's vulnerability is now laid bear for the world to see, divided we will fail. Politicians race for nuanced positions; they want a “do-over”. How wonderfully indecisive that is. What possible excuse can the government give its people the next time? The political well is currently a poisonous pit. Maybe the better question would be what possible response can a politician provide the next time? In any event, it is our young men and women standing watch on the front lines of freedom, those heroes that we send into harms way to protect the freedom’s that we enjoy, those are the benefactors of our political divisiveness.

"What key lesson did over 3000 American citizens have to die to teach you?"

Hate to correct this... but wasn't it just UNDER 3000 people?

Not sure why this is posted, but I lived in Hoboken on 9/11 and worked three blocks from WTC. Was only on the NJ side because I was up late the night before watching my Broncos. I remember the train station being set-up as an ad hoc aid station for the wounded that would never come. Now, I'm in Baghdad.
