The UN can't even wipe its own ass yet it plans to "take action" against an incoming asteroid?

An asteroid may come uncomfortably close to Earth in 2036 and the United Nations should assume responsibility for a space mission to deflect it...

Oh great. We're screwed for sure.

I know I speak for everyone when I say that I feel much safer knowing that the UN will protect me from asteroids and from asteroid-caused Global Smashing.

Latest in a swarm of asteroid threads.
The UN can do nothing. Repeal the Treaty.

An asteroid may come uncomfortably close to Earth in 2036 and the United Nations should assume responsibility for a space mission to deflect it, a group of astronauts, engineers and scientists said on Saturday.

I started laughing so hard at this first sentence, I couldn't read anything more. "The United Nations should assume responsibility" is just so exquisitely laughable. They can't assume responsibility for paying their own damn parking tickets; how can they protect us from an asteroid? Oh, just too funny!

The UN Security Counsel today approved a resolution condemning the incoming asteroid.

"U.N. urged to take action on asteroid threat"

Good! Keep those knuckleheads busy with something they can wrap their tiny brains around and out of our business!

NASA says the precise effect of a 460-foot (140-meter) object hitting the Earth would depend on what the asteroid was made of and the angle of impact.

I recall the opposite being taught- that it doesn't matter the angle or material. When the object hits, its matter is turned to energy; it explodes.

That's why craters appear as circles carved in the ground, even when objects enter at strange angles.

You know, there might be an opportunity to make a buck here. As the date approaches, we'll be able to compute which country is going to be obliterated. We could offer them a deal. We'll nuke the thing for them, while it's still out in space, for the low, low price of — oh — seven hundred billion dollars.

First. the UN has NO space vehicles, NO launch facilities, NO one who has the intelligence to launch a space rocket, so why are these people asking the UN to do something about a space rock that could totally devastate a 200 sq mile or more area of earth?

Astronomers are monitoring an asteroid named Apophis, which has a 1 in 45,000 chance of striking Earth on April 13, 2036.

Anybody care to wager how many Stargate jokes could be made on this thread...

First we'd better send UN inspectors to the asteroid to see if it poses an "imminent" threat or if this is just more Bush lies.
