WASHINGTON — The battle to be the 2008 Democratic candidate for president went negative Wednesday, as leading contenders Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama got into a virtual shouting match.
With more than a year and a half remaining before the next presidential election, the campaigns exchanged heated words after Clinton suggested Obama return funds to Hollywood bigwig David Geffen, who insulted Clinton in a newspaper article.
"We aren’t going to get in the middle of a disagreement between the Clintons and someone who was once one of their biggest supporters. It is ironic that the Clintons had no problem with David Geffen when was raising them $18 million and sleeping at their invitation in the Lincoln bedroom," Obama campaign communications director Robert Gibbs said in a statement that was e-mailed to the news media.
Geffen, a former "Friend of Bill," co-hosted — with Hollywood heavyweights Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg — a star-studded, $1.3 million fundraiser for Obama on Tuesday night in Beverly Hills.
Among the 300 contributors who forked over $2,300 each were George Clooney, Barbra Streisand, Jennifer Aniston, Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy and Morgan Freeman. Also in attendance were Dixie Chick Natalie Maines and director Ron Howard.

Never thought I'd be saying this, but I'm starting to like the Obama guy.
Vince Foster wasn't killed there. According to the trooper, whatever his name is, he was found in his car in the driveway of the White House. Hmmmmm.
The Hollywood-climbing Dixie chick has 'bashed-Bush' her way into the A-List...the un-beautiful really just wanted to be one of the '100 Most Beautiful'...
This is all pre-orchestrated anyway.
You do understand how these 'star-studded extravaganzas' work, don't you?
It is just like the blue collar unions.
The bigwigs sell their influence to the politician, who pay them back with favors once elected.
The 'stars' are so because they must attend and kick in the 'fee', or they are blackballed.
Only those 'stars' that have some other means of getting a 'part' (like Mel) can afford to ignore the call of FAG.
Those whose career is on a downslide are the ones the usually become the most exuberant and vocal supporters of the current 'hollywood' favorite. (like Obama or Clinton).
That's because they hope to curry favor with the bigwigs and gain some publicity in the process of helping influence those that adored them in the past and believed that the actor was the 'part'. (Yeah. Too bad Superman ended up quadraplegic. He could have solved the Iraq mess single handedly if he hadn't gotten injured.)
Bottom line. Attendee's at this event = I'm looking for my next 'part' (job).
Those who make speeches to the press, or hold conferences, = My career is shot and no one's hiring me. This is my only way to get publicity and perhaps that will lead to another 'part'.
Democratic Presidential Candidates Trade Barbs
The two current frontrunners for the Democratic presidential nomination took some shots at each other as the race for the 2008 election heats up.
Barack Obama landed the first blow portraying himself as a fresh face capable of leading a new generation. “America needs a leader with vision and vigor, not a shrill harpy of limited perspicacity,” Obama told a crowd of supporters.
“What are we to make of a senator who voted for the war, but is now against the war,” Obama said. “Didn’t we have enough of this flip-flopping from our party’s candidate in the 2004 race?”
Obama mocked Senator Hillary Clinton’s (D-NY) assertion that she wouldn’t have voted for the war had she known then what she knows now. “One has to wonder how the so-called ‘smartest woman in the world’ could be duped by a clod like George Bush,” Obama mused. “Then I remember, this is a woman who says she was completely ignorant of her husband’s habit of dropping his pants for any woman he could get alone in a room. Is she a liar or a moron? You be the judge.”
Apprised of Obama’s remarks, Senator Clinton belittled his inexperience. “This is pretty brash talk for someone who’s still sucking his thumb,” Clinton retorted. “Do the voters want a person who has already gotten eight years of experience in the White House or some runny-nosed kid? Who do they trust to redistribute America’s wealth for the common good?”
Clinton predicted that she will easily best Obama in next year’s primaries. “I’m already way ahead in the polls,” she reminded. “I will kill him in the primaries. You know, many of those who will vote in the Democratic primaries will probably think that Obama is the leader of the al-Qaeda terrorists that attacked America on 9-11. Between that and the fact that most women will be voting their gonads, his campaign is doomed. He ought to quit before he gets hurt.”
