LONDON, February 27, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) The British governments plans to ban the creation of human/animal hybrid embryos are over after a group of 45 scientists, ethicists and politicians published an open letter in January saying that a ban would hold back the advancement of British science.
The Times reports that the government is now dropping plans to ban the experiments and will instead offer funding for a public debate before new legislation is drafted.
The open letter, published in the Times in response to the governments December 2006 announcement that it planned to draft legislation to ban hybrids, was signed by academic ethicists, members of the House of Lords Select Committee on Stem Cell Research, the head of a biotechnology company and a number of scientists awaiting permission to carry out the research.
The letter said the research was necessary for improving the efficiency of therapeutic cloning techniques and that the Parliamentary committee had concluded after a long inquiry that such research was ethically acceptable and ought to be regulated by the existing agency.
The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) has already received several requests from researchers to begin experiments with hybrids, including one from Dr. Ian Wilmut, the creator of Dolly the cloned sheep and one of the signatories of the Times letter.
Britain is regarded by many scientists and ethicists as having the most permissive national regulatory agency in the world. In recent years, the HFEA has allowed the creation of genetically modified designer babies to be used as tissue farms for sick siblings; the creation of cloned human embryos for stem cell experiments and the eugenic selection and destruction of defective human embryos in IVF treatments.

I've got to re-read C.S.Lewi's trilogy that starts with "Out of the Silent Planet". This reminds me of the final book - "That Hideous Strength".

Maybe for practice they will cross a pit bull with a cobra and then it will turn on the researchers.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
They already did a three way hybrid of a pit bull, a crocodile and a member of a deranged cult, the result is referred to as a "Crocobullshiite".

Would the same research be illegal in the States? Not wanting to start a flame war but just interested?

Take a look at this link:
http://www.humancloning.org/
Anyway, this happens as you begin to remove morals from society. Everything is done on a secular basis with no thought of morals because there are essentially no moral absolutes or rights/wrongs. The left simply argues that everyone's morals differ, and they say if you don't like something just avoid it (like abortion) regardless if other people are getting hurt. Basically, any moral authority is put in the hands of the government, but those boundaries are consistently pushed.
The culture of death has expanded far beyond abortion which is permitted from conception and even to birth in partial birth abortion. It has expanded to destroying human embryos for research or cloning them. It has expanded to destruction and use of fetuses and their tissue for research. It has expanded to destroying embryos or children within the womb that are "defective". It has expanded to assisted suicide, euthanasia, and starving people like Terry Schiavo to death. Now, it is expanding to merging humans with animals. When does it stop? Does it stop? The whole thing reeks of the me first attitude. There is disregard for the lives of others and complete regard for only one's own life. One radical pro-choice feminist claimed she would either abort her child or keep her child but never give her child up for adoption as that is what would be best for HER, screwing her child of course. Heck, in the Netherlands people are being euthanized without permission from them to do so.
According to them and their evolutionary theories, man came from animals and are among the most superior of the animals, why do they want to revert man to monkey like form? Well, that's how the culture of deaths consciouses are going so I guess it makes some sense. They have no clue how these concocted creatures could turn out. They could be extremely dangerous to mankind and remind me of a Frankenstein type experiment.
As a Catholic this sickens me because I believe in the inherent worth and dignity of each person from conception until natural death. I believe humans are unique in that they have a soul. These creatures are not fully human or animal, but equivolently a beast resulting from man attempting to play God.
You know what's next, if these creatures work and begin to mingle with men, men will argue for marriage with them. There will be all sorts of odd combinations like cowman, sheepman, tarantulaman, etc.
