'Corrupt Wife’ Behind Corrupt Official

[2007-02-26]

Recent corruption incidents in China showed that wives played a big 'role' in the corruption of officials. Some wives took bribes together with their husbands, and some pushed their hesitant husband to go for it.

China's Legal Daily listed 8 types of 'corrupt wives' behind corrupt officials. The most common type is a 'bribe-taking partner,' who takes bribe together with their husbands.

Ma Ping, the former party secretary of Dong-rang (?) County, Chongqing, took 2,230,000 yuan (approx: $ 280,000) as bribe, of which he took only 180, 000 yuan alone, and he took the rest with his wife present.

The wife of Ma De, the former party secretary of Shihua, Heilongjiang Province, solicited bribe herself, by dropping hints such as "My husband has to take a trip overseas but we don't have foreign currency," or "My husband's only joy in life is to play mahjong." The wife of the former Traffic Bureau of Beijing pushed her hesitant husband to take bribe, saying, "How could we live with your salary only? How would you plan to survive if you retire?", and she also solicited bribe herself, according to the investigation on them.

Other common types are 'taking the lead,' in which a wife is more aggressively seek bribes, and 'baiting,' in which a wife threatens the potential target by hinting that things may not work out. It is also revealed that wives of officials who were caught in taking bribes never declined or returned gifts they received.

Whether it is a gift or cash, regardless of who brought them, the wives 'took them all.' Legal Daily also listed 'thick-skinned type', who never repent even after they are caught, and 'evaporating type,' who disappears after her husband is caught.

As it becomes clear that corrupt spouses are behind corrupt officials, some provincial governments are conducting anti-corruption education for wives (of officials.) Party Organization Dept. of Guang-an, Sichuan Province, recently got the oath from the wives of senior officials, which says, "We will follow all party regulations and laws, and help our spouses stay clean."

Premier Wen Jiabao recently emphasized, "Senior officials should put their spouses and children under strict care." The old maxim, "Taking good care of yourself and your household is a prerequisite for making your country peaceful and prosperous,” has never been truer in China.

Yes, Bonnie and Clyde have set a world-wide example. We must give the Clintons credit for ONE THING. They did prove that crime in Washington, DC does pay.
