Al-Qaeda has a China problem, and no one is watching. Despite al-Qaeda's significant efforts to support Muslim insurgents in China, Beijing has succeeded in limiting popular support for anti-government violence.
The latest evidence came on January 5, when China raided a terrorist facility in the country's Xinjiang region, near the borders with Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. According to reports, 18 terrorists were killed and 17 were captured, along
with 22 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and material for thousands more.
Chinese reportage on terrorism is notoriously problematic, at times imprecise or simply fabricated. For the skeptics, photos of a policeman killed in the raid were also released, showing emotional relatives amid a sea of People's Armed Police paying their final respects. Ironically, China's ability to kill or capture militants without social blowback demonstrates the significant degree to which it has won the population's "hearts and minds", however grudgingly.
China's successful efforts to keep the global jihad from spreading into its territory present a real challenge for al-Qaeda. The organization reportedly trained more than 1,000 Uighurs, a Turkic ethnic group that is predominantly Muslim, in camps in Afghanistan prior to September 11, 2001. In late December, al-Qaeda's No 2, Ayman al-Zawahiri, called for action against "occupation" governments ruling over Muslims, including reference to the plight of Uighurs in western China.
Yet despite this commitment of resources and rhetorical energy, Uighurs across Xinjiang's social spectrum explain that violent resistance is no longer a viable path. Many in Xinjiang believe that insurgents worsen Uighurs' plight by making the Chinese more fearful, thereby more repressive. Uighurs today increasingly participate in the Chinese system as local government and Communist Party officials, educators, informants and police.

China's got to be one of the last places on earth to try to spread Islamic terrorism. They'll jail abody and their prison camps are worse than Stalin's.
OH MAN I wouldn't want be terrorist in China if you capture you won't be hear from AGAIN LOL!
Yeah, that's pretty much China's motto.
What? No lawyers? No specially prepared meals? No prayer time? No supportive editorials? You mean the Chinese are taking a hard-line approach and succeeding? Someone alert the NYT!

The Falun Gong has a China problem too.
The author's conclusion reveals a deep admiration for China that biases his report.
The truth is that neither the terrorists aren't loved by the Chinese, and the lack of "blowback" has more to do with the lack of tolerance of dissent with governmental policies than with any real love of the government.
One of the lines should read: "The truth is that neither the terrorists nor the Chinese government are loved that much by the Chinese people."
WHO IS THAT NAIVE...!? Oh, sure, yeah their success has NOTHING to do with simply driving a tank over the heads of terrorists, nah..!
Oh, yeah, people are just so IN LOVE with the Chinese commies, yeah...!
Finally the Alq's have met an enemy as ruthless as they are. A bigger, stonger, nastier enemy at that.
I have no idea the time frame of it all.. but of the handfull of countries that truley are trying to take over the world, I think this will be the future...
I think the islam radicals will manage to expand into all the places they are causing trouble now, Africa, parts of Europe, etc .
But the chinese being long term goal oriented will eventually be the main power in the world. Unlike the islam culture the chinese are investing in high level education. The advantage going to the Chinese because unlike America the chinese govt. will be every bit as brutal as the arabs.
Our country is going to be eaten from inside with the splintering of the culture, the collapse of social programs, and the 40 percent of our own citizens that have lost the will for self preservation.
It really makes me sick thinking of it ...It reminds me of the drive to build a WW2 war memorial ...remember how people in hollywood seemed to drive alot of the publicity for it after Saving Private Ryan ? You kept hearing why haven't we built a WW2 war memorial? To me it always seemed obvious ...every square inch of our country is a memorial to the sacrifices of our troops... and the support we at home gave them. Some people just can't seem to see it?
I admit I tend to be overly pessimistic, and I often hope I am wrong ...I am not anxious to see how it turns out.
This Asia Times article points out that the Chinese have been able to reduce the Uiguir (sp) terror threat by providing more opportunity for young Us to participate in the economy and activities of China. This is contrasted to our actions in Iraq by concentrating on the Military solution rather than the economic social approach which seems to be having success in that Chinese province.
