MOSCOW: The first air defense regiment equipped with new S-400 Triumf ground-to-air missile systems will be put on combat duty in the Moscow Region in the middle of 2007, a manufacturer said Tuesday.

The Military-Industrial Commission, which answers directly to the Russian president, meets Tuesday to consider prospects for a fifth-generation air-defense system and building aerospace defenses in the country.

"The [new] regiment will have more [missile] batteries than regiments currently equipped with S-300 air defense systems," said Alexander Lemansky, chief designer at the Almaz Science and Production Association.

Lemansky said new S-400 systems considerably differ from S-300 systems by their effective firing range, firing capacity and other parameters.

S-300 (SA-10 Grumble) anti-aircraft missile system was designed to protect military and industrial facilities from mass air strikes. A missile launched from the system can travel at a speed of 2,000 meters per second and is capable of hitting a target at a distance of 150 km (93 miles) flying at a height of up to 30 km (19 miles) and at a speed of up to 10,000 km/h (6,215 mph).

"The effective firing range of the new [S-400] system is twice that of the previous S-300 [system] and its firing capacity is more than double," Lemansky said.

First Deputy Prime Minister and former defense minister Sergei Ivanov, who oversees defense-related sectors and chairs today's meeting of the commission, earlier said new S-400 Triumf ground-to-air missile systems were adopted for service in late 2006 and will be placed on alert duty later this year.

Looks something like a PAC 3.

Probably is based on stolen plans.

A good topic for the MSM is exactly why Putin thinks he needs these missiles. Who in the region is he defending against? China?

Maybe another question would be how many of these potential adversaries would be using Russian aircraft to attack Moscow?

Not sure.
Just ask army or marine how they feel when officer tell them:

"Up on that steep hill is MG nest. All you gotta do is sneak and throw hand-granate. Piece of cake!"

Not the same comparison at all. These things are large and can be seen with satellites from space. A strike package would fly out of is range and deliver a salvo of standoff weapons. Boom no more air defense.Yes its mobile but it is still large.

Sure.
But not all you can see you can hit.
Also theese things are stationed some 100 km inside Russian terrtitory, with range of 400 km (lets say 200 miles) it is hard to get them in range of your onboard missiles. Also S-300/400 are protected by Tor or Tunguska systems.

And that is if you get to see lounchers.
And if you are left with usable satelites to see them at first place.

Cypruss is using S-300 missiles to defend against Turkey.

No one is going to attack inside russia. If the US did it would be with ICBM's and SLBM's because we know they would retaliate with nukes.

Like a said yes they are dangerous but totally defeatable if we need to do it.

"A good topic for the MSM is exactly why Putin thinks he needs these missiles."

In the Cold War, the Soviets telegraphed the falsity of their 'no first strike' pledge by doing this. Their ABMs went to protect Moscow. In the US, our ABMs went to protect our ICBM silos. Russian didn't need to protect their silos, because they'd be emptied in the first strike.

Looks like they are still fighting the Cold War. No one but the US would attack them in the way they are defending.

Not based in Cyprus. After all the uproar about basing them in Cyprus they are operated by Greece in Crete.

The Ruskies have always invested in & created capable air-defences to balance out the West's air superiority. The S-300 evolved around the same time as the PAC-2 & is often rated as better than the Patriot(given it's miserable performance in Desert Storm).

Turks threatened with war if stationed on Cypruss, cause range of S-300 would cover good part of Turkish territory.
There is magic: from Crete they can defend cypriot airspace...
