Does he conspire with the Demoncrats to bring down his own party like McCain does?

Meh, the business conservatives have had their way for too long with this party. Now they are trying to just cram their own people, like Guiliani, down social conservatives throats and trying to sabotage anybody who doesn't tow their line.

They are going to end up getting Hillary elected when social conservatives just say the heck with it and sit home in November.

I don't think what is considered "free-trade" these days is supported by man conservatives. This one, for sure.

I have yet to understand how Duncan Hunter came to be perceived as the "true conservative" alternative to McCain, Guliani, and Romney. I am fairly familiar with the membership of the House, and when I think of principled, articulate, inspiring, "movement" conservatives in the House that might make a good conservative presidential candidate, Duncan Hunter simply does not come to mind. He blends into the crowd. Just another House Republican. Some of the facts listed in this column confirm my suspicion.

No candidate is perfect - politicians spend money (gasp!). I would like to see spending curtailed, definitely, but I happen to agree with Hunter's stance on China. When I compare my value system to Hunter and to the other candidates running - Duncan Hunter still comes out on top.

GO DUNCAN HUNTER!!!

Conservatism can't be redefined to mean social issues only. Otherwise, it becomes a sectarian movement largely comprised of very religious folks that cannot get to 51% in any election.

I think there are some Freepers who would prefer conservatism to equal religious issues plus national security. That totally misunderstands the rich intellectual history of conservatism, both the Tory strain in the UK and the modern movement here started by, quite frankly, a bunch of New Yorkers! Buckley, the Kristols, Will, etc.

Political conservatism is a movement open to both religious and irreligious and is based on how one views the role of government more than anything. Economic freedom is one of its central tenets, as is taming the federal leviathan, and Duncan Hunter misses the mark on both counts.

I don't understand the hype about this guy Hunter here on FR. Granted, I'm a Rudy guy myself BUT (unlike some on the fringe right here who won't vote for Rudy if he wins) I will vote for Hunter in the general election if he wins the primaries. I am petrified of the Hildebeast.

However, Hunter just doesn't seem too presidential. He's kind of sloppy, a tad overweight, hair's always messy- anything but presidential, IMHO. Personally, I could care less about these cosmetic faults, but the Oprah age is now upon us...

Why is it everytime someone on the right shows a bit of promise, the buffoons come out of the closet and start the hit-pieces on them.

It's a good thing most of us would rather wait and see/hear the person rather than relying on MSM reports on them...which are historically left-biased.

I've been hearing some about Hunter, but I will wait until I see and hear him, and watch him in some debates, before I pass judgements.

The press could be as wrong about Hunter as they were Jimmy CArter, bill clinton, and John Kerry...except in the opposite direction.

***YES on the 527 bill (like most Republicans, he flip-flopped, having first voted NO on McCain-Feingold)***

I'm going to go through all of these, but I'll start with this one. Hunter voted a solid NO on McCain-Feingold because it was a BAD law. The 527 bill attempted to clean up that BAD law by making 527 orginazations identify all of their contributors.

I urge you all to read this article -
http://thehill.com/business--lobby/527-bill-splits-republicans-2006-04-05.html

You will see that the Club for Growth which is a 527 organization has an ax to grind with Duncan Hunter and any one that voted for this bill.

I'll also add that Duncan Hunter has been very strong on increasing the military spending that was decimated during the Clinton years. By voting for bills that increase the military spending it overall makes him look like a big spender.

The candidate with the early lead historically goes on to win the Republican nomination. That does not in this case appear to be Duncan Hunter.

Duncan Hunter is lost in among the Republican field - despite his avid following here on FR.

Duncan Hunter is a congressman, a legislator with no executive experience that I'm aware of. He was a soldier, a lawyer and then a congressman -- all admiral accomplishments, but he lacks the resume of skills necessary to be president, imo.

Americans are looking for someone who has executive experience, with a record of accomplishments running a large organization, like a governor or like a -- yes, like a mayor.

Yes, Hunter has been part of the problem, and not the solution....But hey! He likes walls and fortresses around America, and that's good enough for the anti-free trade freepers who call themselves "The true conservatives".

I had heard that Hunter was a "protectionist" which picqued my interest, but this voting record pretty much negates any "America First" qualities.

Rep. Duncan Hunter's official Presidential website doesn't have a way to contact his Presidential campaign by e-mail, and his Congressional website e-mail address only involves his constituents from his California Congressional District. He needs to seriously read some feedback from conservatives from all over the U.S. Hunter also needs to seriously explain to a majority of conservatives about his positions on spending issues and on supporting the present, "screwy" campaign finance reform system. At this point, he's my first choice for '08 President, but I'm also seriously keeping an eye on Rep. Tom Tancredo, former Rep. Newt Gingrich, former Senator Fred Thompson, John Cox, and Rep. Ron Paul to see what happens with all of them and Rep. Duncan Hunter v.s. the present first tier GOP Presidential candidates. We still have a way to go in the '08 Presidential race. I'm hoping that the final GOP Presidential candidate, whoever that may be, is seriously ready for victory when the time comes. Any present Democratic Presidential candidate would truly be much worse as President than any of the present GOP Presidential candidates, and this even includes Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney and Senator John McCain. Voting for the "lesser of two evils" may become necessary yet again, and I seriously don't want a Democratic President again!
