Rita Cosby is leaving MSNBC at the end of the month. Her contract was due to expire April 1 and was not going to be renewed, according to sources familiar with the matter.
MSNBC cancelled Cosby's 10 p.m. show, Rita Cosby Live and Direct, in June. The network dumped Tucker Carlson's 11 p.m. show then too to make way for documentary programming.
At the time, Cosby was named head of a new specials unit, but she has been featured sparingly since.
The former Fox News personality gained notoriety for her celebrity pieces, most recently a story on Anna Nicole Smith's private funeral in the Bahamas.
"NBC replaced live programming with taped shows during some primetime slots, including mine," Cosby said in a statement. "I then began discussions with the network about my future interests and expressed my desire to move on.
"I am committed to devoting my attention full-time to my work and obligations at the network. I intend to continue doing so until I leave at the end of the month. I wish all of my MSNBC and NBC colleagues the best for the future. As of April 1st, I will begin to explore the new opportunities."

Linda Vester Not Coming Back To FNC
Last June, TVNewser broke the news that Linda Vester was taking a year-long maternity leave. "It's only a year, and I'm sure the time will fly by," she said last July 3. At the time, Vester's 1pm show, DaySide, was one of the lowest-rated programs on FNC. "It seems likely that Vester won't return to Studio D after her year-long maternity leave," sources said last August.
Well a year has passed, and it's time for Vester to come back to FNC, right? No. Fox News Channel has told ICN that "there are no plans for her to rejoin the network at this time." Meanwhile, DaySide has actually lost viewers since Linda left; she had 225,000 demo and 758,000 viewers in June 2005, and that's down to 209,000 demo and 709,000 viewers in June 2006 with Mike Jerrick and Juliet Huddy hosting...

Well, i'm one of the ones they lost
when she went. Jerrick & Huddy...
Huddy i liked...*she* would have
been a good replacement for E.D.
But the two together, were qa bit
Donny & Marie...qand the show came
off a bit eoo rice cake-ery.
But that 1 pm slot is going
to be hard for anyone to really
keep the numbers up for, without
an extended build up of audience
loyalty. Especially with so much
fuffer nuttery. It was much better
when they really made the show
about one topic, had relevant
questions, and let the audience ask
more than two filler questions
at the end of the show.
\Besides, it was nice eye candy
to see Linda and then Juliet out
in the audience passing the mike
around....
