Democratic Rep. Pete Stark of Fremont was the only member of Congress on Friday to vote "present" on a bill setting a deadline to withdraw troops from Iraq.
Stark said he could not support the bill, which passed 218-212-1, because of his strong opposition to the war.
"Throughout my career in Congress, I've voted against defense spending and against war," Stark said. "Building new weapons systems and waging war doesn't solve problems. If the last four years are any indication, it actually makes them worse."
A number of other California liberals who are in the Progressive Caucus and the Out of Iraq Caucus also considered the legislation too weak because it funds ongoing operations in Iraq and sought a quicker withdrawal deadline. The legislation calls for combat troops to be pulled out of Iraq by next year.
However, the liberal groups agreed not to block the legislation, although some individual members voted no anyway.
Stark, who has represented suburban San Francisco voters since 1973, takes pride in being consistently rated the most liberal member of Congress. Last week, he made headlines when he was identified as the only member of Congress to be an atheist.
In the real world, I don't give a damn if someone believes in a god or not, if you're not with our troops, I hope there's a Hell for you to burn in.
The "dissing a veteran" you're talking about was also on Fox News about 2 years ago or so... Pete Stark is an absolute irrelevant nutjob...perfectly poised for representing the SF Bay Area (East Bay). You can watch the video news story that plays the voicemail where he denigrated a constituent who just returned from an overseas deployment to Kosovo. The soldier was just writing to his congressman and got this angry insulting voicemail back. Check out the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djeGqNVXjZE
that guy looks like a dog I saw in a dog show.
Thank God he wasn't in Congress during WWII, otherwise there's a real possibility we'd all be speaking German today!
I just found this article on San Francisco Chronicle's website from 2003 where they list a bunch of wacky things Pete Stark has done...even the liberal Chronicle was calling for his replacement!

So, Stark has voted against spending for war throughout his career.
But in this case, he made an exception and didn't vote against it.
Now this is a real chickensh*&
What're we fightin for ---- I don't give a damn
Don't worry, when talking about San Fran, it's implied.
