Hey Newt! The guys who signed the Constitution owned every kind of military weapon that was available in their day, up to and including warships.
I am deeply sorry to hear of your loss. I most sincerely hope they caught the perpetrator.
"There are no dangerous weapons, only dangerous people." Robert Heinlein.

Yeah. He’ll never see a free day again.
If the 2nd Amendment were treated today as it was in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Bill Gates and Warren Buffet would be expected to own their own Carrier Battle Groups.
Nearly every warship, cannon, and musket in the Colonies was privately owned. We couldn't have won the Revolutionary War without privately owned weapons.
Ordinarily Newts a pretty bright guy, but on this issue he suffers from a nasty case of Potomac Fever.

There are other areas where he’s squishy too.
“My sister was murdered with a two dollar folding knife. I wonder if Gingrich would be uncomfortable about his neighbor having one.”
I bet he’d be uncomfortable living next to the guy who murdered your sister.
Well, then maybe he should have a .50 cal...
“There are other areas where hes squishy too.”
Name ‘em.
Global warming.
Abortion.
Federal involvement in health care.
There’s a few.
“Global warming.
Abortion.
Federal involvement in health care.
Theres a few.”
How is he a “squish” on these issues?
“If the 2nd Amendment were treated today as it was in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Bill Gates and Warren Buffet would be expected to own their own Carrier Battle Groups.”
Is this a good idea?
Well, I heard him talk about global warming last summer. He sounded like a believer. His comments in this interview on the subject leave him lots of wiggle room, though I think he’s realized where his bread is buttered by now.
He avoids the abortion issue like the plague. Always has.
Have you read his draft Contract II? It’s full of government “solutions,” particularly on healthcare issues.
Irrelevant.
And to answer the question posed in your tagline I submit the name of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
L
“Irrelevant.”
Then why did you post it?
“And to answer the question posed in your tagline I submit the name of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.”
Ike built a fence?
Not really
NG: Right. I just think, you know, if you said to me would I feel comfortable if my next door neighbor had a 50 caliber machine gun, I would say no.
“Have you read his draft Contract II? Its full of government solutions, particularly on healthcare issues.”
I have not read the Contract II. Do you have a link?

A few outtakes:
Transform health care into a 21st Century Intelligent Health System that improves our health while lowering costs dramatically. In the process, American health care will become our highest value export and foreign exchange earning sector.
Develop a new model of quality long-term care in which both the care and the quality of life are compatible with a twenty-first century American expectation of progress and innovation.
Use the new technologies and new scientific knowledge to turn disabilities into capabilities and change government regulations and programs to help every American achieve the fullest possible ability to pursue happiness.
That’s a disappointing take on the 2nd Amendment.
I would like to see some clarification about that.
