I agree, but even if we were not at war, I find it extremely rude and disgraceful. I wish these people would go live somewhere other than America and leave her to those of us who still appreciate what we have here and why we have a Battle Hymm.

Are you speaking to the origins of the melody? Certainly the words are glorifying to God. I find no offense, if you have more details , please let me know.

I agree that laughing at something funny is therapeutic BUT this is nothing more than a 'MEDIA EVENT' and during a time that this nation is at war to BURB "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" is a slap in the face to this country and inexcusable.

To frolic, in public, with one the most propagandistic element in our society while our soldiers are dying for that elements right to do so, may be hilarious to some, to me it is sickening and reprehensible.

I'm sure that not all people in Oklahoma and the rest of the country think this episode, as a joke.

First, I'm not in Oklahoma. :-)

Second, since when does a media event have to be "not funny"? Are they not allowed to have fun? Same question I asked before: Do you have to agree never to laugh, even at yourself, once you take public office? I for damn sure wouldn't vote for anyone like that. I cannot trust anyone who is incapable of laughing at themselves. People who suffer from that affliction are far too self-important and unwilling to take a critical look at their actions. Fortunately, these folks aren't like that. Do you think that Bush, Rove, et al, don't know the media don't agree with them? Yet they agreed to attend, and agreed to participate, knowing full well they weren't going to be made to look like Einstein and Newton. They had fun. God forbid that ever happen again, eh? Especially if any Democrats are laughing at the same time! The horror... the horror...

Third, The Battle Hymm Of The Republic is a song. Nothing more. The words hold meaning, yes. They're beautiful, in context. But there's nothing holy or sacrosanct about them in general. They are not off limits to parody or satire. I've sang "Amazing Grace" to a beautiful girl who happened to be named Grace, changing the words so that it was, shall we say, a bit more prurient in nature rather than a hymn. Does that condemn me to an eternity in hell, or was it simple fun using nothing more than a familiar melody?

Fourth, there are no doubt others who have the same misplaced stick, as can be judged by the responses on this thread. I wish I had a piece of coal for everyone here. By the end of the day I'd have enough diamonds to retire wealthy.

And lastly, would you then say, were we not at war, that this would be funny to you?

Look, it's your right to not like what went on. It's the right of others to find it uproariously funny. It really is that simple.

Certainly you've heard it. I hope I don't get in trouble for this, as it was, at the time, a children's song.

Glory, glory hallelooooyer
Teacher hit me with a ruler
Met 'er at the door with a loaded .44
and she teaches school no more....

la la la

Like I said, we'd be arrested for singing that on the playground today. Little did we know as children that we were apparently defiling the greatest song EVAR!!!11Eleventy1!!

And by "we'd", I mean children. I would be arrested and sued just for being near a playground in today's overcautious and overly litigious society.

How about when Washington Redskin, John Riggins told Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor: "Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight," then passed out on the floor.

He he he. There are times in a young boy's life he wants to kill the teacher.

......one that culminated with the two volunteers burping "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" to the incredulous delight of their colleagues.

DISGUSTING!

So that's how it's supposed to go! I just remember the kinder, gentler, version:

Glory, glory hallelujah
Teacher hit me with the ruler
So I knocked her on the bean
With a rotten tangerine
And that was the end of the school year.

How about this version, from 1963:
Hang Earl Warren from a sour apple tree.
His impeachment still won't fill the bill for folks like you and me.
We'll soon cast off the yoke of his judicial tyranny
As we go charging on.

Off we charge in all directions,
Wiretaps and Red detections,
Inciting Communist defections,
As we go charging on.
