EU foreign policy chief says Iran made 'big mistake' in capture of British troops

The European Union's foreign policy chief said Friday that Iran made a "big mistake" in its handling of the standoff over its seizure of 15 British sailors and marines. Upon his arrival at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Germany, Javier Solana told reporters that Iran "should release the soldiers immediately."

The ministers from the EU's 27 national governments planned to send a "signal of solidarity" with Britain, said Germany's foreign minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who was hosting the meeting. Britain was looking for support from its European partners for finding a peaceful solution. (AP)

What are they going to do about it, write a diplomatic, inoffensive letter expressing their displeasure? I can feel the mullahs shaking in their pointy toed boots.

As a former Secretary General of NATO, maybe he actually means something by that,

Nah.

"Release the prisoners or else?"

Achydingyjad "Or else what?"

"Or else we will be very very angry with you and we will write you a letter telling you how angry we are"

Big mistake? How so? Looks like they are getting away with it, even benefiting from it.

At least the EU is more direct than the disgraceful UN declaration.

Iran has today, btw, paraded another of the hostages on Iranian TV where he "appologizes" to the people of Iran for trespassing on their territory.

Breaking news just now is that Iran has released another letter from Faye Turney where "she" claims to be "sacrificed to U.S. and British policy". Whatever that means...

Just what I was thinking... to paraphrase Robin Williams
"Release them... or I'll say 'Release them' again!"

BTW, I expect these hostages will be visiting Iranian nuclear labs in the very near future... as human shields.

"She" apparently tells the UK to stop oppressing people and brings up Aby Ghraib...

Yes, the EU is striking back with harsh language and a ban on exporting kidney pies to Iran. Take that, Abedinejahid!

Does the entire EU combined have enough forces to invade Lichtenstein, let alone Iran?

If the EU agrees unanimously to ANYTHING it is a big deal....maybe they have finally had enough? If it can happen to one of them, it can happen to any of them...not a good sign for Iran...

Maybe I'm wrong but my feeling is that if something were going to be done, it would already have happened. We are now well into the diplomatic routine that culminates with everybody agreeing that doing nothing is both the best and the only solution.

You may be right. These same brave people know they may be required to lay down thier lives to stop this tyrant and his dealings. I say escalate, bring it!

I guess the next EU action will be to wrap yellow ribbons around trees & start an official count of days.
