I'm guessing that Fred doesn't want to officially declare his candidacy too early. The entire 2008 campaign began prematurely and a fatigue-factor could set in, not to mention if Fred declares now it gives the MSM more time to slander and lie about him. Sounds like stategery to me.

Not to mention, as long as he doesn't declare officially, he gets the benefits of 1) all of the media buzz about "will he or won't he", and 2) the additional (non-regulated) exposure from filling in for Paul Harvey and his Law and Order appearances.

"all of the media buzz about "will he or won't he""

It's a pretty good strategy when you think about it. It usually costs a lot of money for a person who is not in office to establish name recognition. The media buzz about his "possible" (I read that as "inevitable") candidacy can take the place of a whole lot of fund raising. And all he has to do is keep saying "I am considering . . ."

It would be nice to think he is both conservative and wily enough to pull a "Tom Sawyer" on the media and get them to paint his fence.

Excellent point.

Another unintended consequence of McKeating/Feingold.
