Recall expanded to some dry cat food

By Andrew Bridges, Associated Press Writer

March 30, 2007

WASHINGTON --Federal testing of recalled pet foods turned up a chemical used to make plastics but failed to confirm the presence of a cancer drug also used as rat poison. The recall expanded Friday to include the first dry pet food.

The Food and Drug Administration said Friday it found melamine in samples of the Menu Foods pet food involved in the original recall and in imported wheat gluten used as an ingredient in the company's wet-style products. Cornell University scientists also found melamine in the urine of sick cats, as well as in the kidney of one cat that died after eating some of the recalled food.

Meanwhile, Hill's Pet Nutrition recalled its Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry cat food. The food included wheat gluten from the same supplier that Menu Foods used. The recall didn't involve any other Prescription Diet or Science Diet products, said the company, a division of Colgate-Palmolive Co.

FDA was working to rule out the possibility that the contaminated wheat gluten could have made it into any human food. However, melamine is toxic only in high doses, experts said, leaving its role in the pet deaths unclear.

Menu Foods recalled 60 million containers of cat and dog food, sold throughout North America under nearly 100 brands, earlier this month after animals died of kidney failure after eating the Canadian company's products. It is not clear how many pets may have been poisoned by the apparently contaminated food, although anecdotal reports suggest hundreds if not thousands have died. The FDA alone has received more than 8,000 complaints; the company, more than 300,000.

"...You telling me that some of my dishes are made out of cow piss? Uuhg!..."

No no no ... they're made out of plastic! Good, durable, non-rusting plastic! It's good stuff, and economical, too!

The plastic is made out of cow-piss ............... FRegards

That is so sad FranApple. I'm so sorry. We give our pets our hearts and when we loose them, it is really hard. Was your cat sick for a while, can you tell me what happened, such as the food she ate and how long she was sick? I am only getting vague information with a list of symptoms from the media, but nothing very clear. If you don't want to discuss it, I understand.

I have not seen a place to report pet deaths, but I am sure there will be one out there soon. I'll let you know if I come across a website with this information. It would be a sad one to read.

It sounds like both of our dogs have not eaten the listed brands and are both sick. I am wondering if the list will continue to grow. I hope not. I hope it is just a coincidence.

I hope your little dog will feel better soon. Let me know how things go.

I always wondered what that strange taste was when I poured hot coffee into a plastic cup ONCE and drank it

I prefer the taste of coffee without the piss-pour (piss-rich?) taste of the plastic.

Styrofoam, cardboard, ceramic all work for me.

Thanks for the excellent scientific explanation!

Here we have the myth of many brands with one producer. I really wonder if there is any difference between the brands, other than packaging

Exactly what I was thinking. I'm tempted to start cooking for my dogs til this is cleared up, who knows what one will be pulled next!!

There is no place to report when your pets died is there?

Saw this site on Fox news today, they are saying this is the only site they know of where people are reporting the deaths & it is a much higher number than MSM is reporting.

My dogs were not eating any of the affected brands listed & two of mine have been vomitting on & off the past few days. I'm beginning to think they have NO CLUE to what is causing this & whatever it is may be in ALL dog food!!!!

In many cases, no. Norris Tweedy, my Kraft Foods rep back when I was in the restaurant business, always told me to "consider the egg" whenever I suggested that all food products came from the same spout.

I'd like to know if this is jihadists doing a test to see just how vulnerable the food supply chain is. Will they put poison in people food next?
Our food supply chain is vulnerable. Our power distribution system is vulnerable. The country goes into panic mode at the least little thing. All the jihadis have to do is hit 2 places at once successfully and the country is in 24 hour panic mode.

Even if they mixed an entire tank car of the stuff in with the wheat gluten, it should have made a high concentration of toxin in a few batches, then been diluted in the subsequent batches. I hope that they cleaned the line after each lot. I expect that they at least purged the system when they went from one kind of food to another - say from tuna to chicken.

Even if they were blending wheat gluten from several different sources, the contaminated gluten would have to have a high amount of poison in it to be dangerous after blending, which would dilute it. This is possible, but I think unlikely. I still suspect bacteria. It might be something new, or an evolved bacteria that's harmless by itself, but excretes toxic waste products.

BTW>>>With dry pet foods, throw it in the freezer for 24 hours after buying it, that kills tiny bugs that get in there in shipment or in warehouses.

Dang, you must have a huge freezer. Either that, or you buy really small bags of dry food.

They called it 'Melmac'(Melmac-melamine: get it?), and it was once very popular as durable, non-rusting, outdoor, tableware.

I always thought that Melmac was the planet where Alf once lived.

PS: I have been waiting to tell that story for 30 years ...

I'm glad you finally got the opportunity to tell it. Reading your story got me to thinking about a few things.

The plot thickens!

I couldn't see what brands were bad from the article. My cat and dog both eat Iams dry food. Is that one of the contaminated foods?
