Are You Concerned About Mitt Romney's Faith?
LDS.org ^ | 3/31/07 | Reaganesque

There has been much controversy here at Free Republic about a Mormon running for President. Mitt Romney has been questioned about his faith and many people here have posted things here expressing concern about what they consider to be "weird" doctrines. Today and tomorrow, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is holding their 177th Semi-Annual General Conference in which the leaders of the church address the membership around the world directly.

In light of the many misconceptions regarding the LDS (Mormon) church here on FR, I offer the following links for those who have questions and concerns about Mitt and his faith. Conference is a great opportunity for those who know little about the Mormon church to have a few questions answered; to get your answers straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak. Therefore, here is a link to the broadcast website:

April 2007 LDS General Conference

There are audio streams available in multiple languages and video from KSL TV in Salt Lake City and KBYU, Brigham Young University's television station. The video links are in the first paragraph at the top of the page.

The next session begins at 4pm Eastern/3pm Central. Tomorrow's sessions will be at 12 noon/11 am Central and 4 pm Eastern/3 pm Central. Sessions are 2 hours long.

It is a public broadcast so no passwords or registration are required.

This is not a religion post. It is intended to give those who are interested in Mitt Romney an opportunity to allay concerns they may have about his faith. That said, many may listen to Conference and come away convinced that we are all heretics. Who knows? Others will have answers to their concerns about Mitt. It is for these people I post this thread. Now, I fully expect this thread will draw flames. Please do, I won't mind. The comparison between the Conference speakers, what they have to say and the way in which they say it versus those who feel the need to post contradictory information and they way they present their case will also be most enlightening for those who feel inclined to at least hear Mitt out and to take the time to find out for themselves about the controversy surrounding his religion.

No. I have no problem with a member of LDS being President. It is Matt's past policy possessions that worry me.

Politicians believe in power, for otherwise they have no business being in the business. Every other belief of theirs is at most secondary, and frequently fictitious.

His faith will have no basis as to whether or not I'll vote for him or not.

I'd rather have a Republican Mormon than a Democratic Moron.

Am I concerned?

No.

I am more concerned about the Secular Humanist faith of the leading Democrat contenders.

Mormons in general share the same Conservative values as most Christian faiths, but they live their values far more. I won't argue the issue if they are or aren't Christian here.. that is between them and God.

I am not in any way worried about Romney's faith. I admire him because he is a man of faith.

The ugly rumors, the shrill rhetoric, the nasty prejudices surrounding Romney's campaign remind me very much of where we were almost ffty years ago when Jack Kennedy was running for Prez.

And before that, going back to the 1928 campaign, it reminds me of the vicious anti-Catholic rhetoric employed against Al Smith.

No, I am not. I served several years in the USMC with several Mormons, and all were of high character. And, I have known others of that faith and never known one of low quality. I am, however, concerned about Romney's politics, i.e., does he have the truly conservative principles I want in a candidate?
