ABC’s "20/20" Seeking "Armed Citizen" Stories

Friday, April 06, 2007

Gun ban groups often claim that private citizens rarely, if ever, use guns in self-defense. ABC News’ "20/20" is now putting that claim to the test, asking viewers to submit their own real-life "Armed Citizen" stories. ABC’s website asks:

Have you ever defended yourself from a crime in your home, in your business, or in public by using a gun? Perhaps you warded off a potential attacker by simply showing a gun?

If you’ve personally used a gun in a legitimate act of self-protection against a criminal attacker, we encourage you to tell your story to ABC News. To tell your story, go to http://www.abcnews.go.com/2020/story?id=3015150 and complete their web form.

And to ensure that we at NRA know how many responses ABC gets, please send us a copy of your story by e-mailing armedcitizen@nrahq.org. You can also call NRA Public Affairs at (703) 267-1193.

You should have seen their faces. They kept fighting to maintain eye contact, but they were obviously losing the battle.

The last straw was me inviting them in for some coffee.

I still see them knocking on other doors, but they give my house a wide berth.

I’ve never shot anyone, and hope never have to, but the .45 by my bed is helpful for sleep.

Actually they’re not. The last line of the piece is NRA asking members who submit stories to ABC to also submit them to NRA by email or phone so that ABC’s response can be verified.

>>Actually, this is probably a request for a John Stossel story.

That was my thought as well.

We need to keep an eye on this, as it is likely to lead to a good segment for our side, if it is a Stossel story in the works.

Stoessel is *very* effective at communicating to the masses, and generally makes Libs look extremely foolish in the process. He’s about the only guy in the Old Media I have any respect for, and I have a huge amount, for him.

Heck, in the world of the MSM, being a populist (O’Reilly) is conservative.

Can you send me his left over dog food...

Sorry. I gave it to my mother-in-law. She was the only one in the family not killed in the shooting.

Given my personal experience with the media (in this case, it was local, the evening before the Brady Bill was passed) I was stupid enough to give an interview, and they took a very small portion of it completely out of context. Be very careful about what you say, and don't assume that the context will be shown.

I had to use that for a Jehovah's Witness who pestered my buddy in college. It was “gun cleaning day” and the living room had rifles, shotguns and pistols all over. I said politely (never met him before) that maybe he should just prostelyze somebody else. Problem solved.

They stopped bothering me after just one visit, when I told them that I'd be happy to listen to their good news, if I could then share my good news about Satan, and then told them, "yes, I worship Satan."

They never came back, and didn't even leave a copy of "The Watchtower!"

Chance that they will give armed responses a fair shake... zero-point-three percent. (Stossel might be doing the story.)

Amen to that. They depart quickly regardless of the type of firearm. My experiences were mostly with my .45 ACP, but a couple were with my sawed-off Remington 870.

I ♥ my riot gun: I keep the magazine full (6 rounds), but the chamber empty, because that slide action says so much.

“oops! Let me get these out of your way”

I have another “extra security” detraction technique that I use. My family and I have moved A LOT. Every time we move, we would get a number of calls from “security companies” (along with all kinds of other folks selling stuff to new residents).

When we received the phone call, I would tell them that “We already have a security system, motion detectors, dog, and a house full of gun toting marines. We believe in lots of overkill when it comes to unwanted intruders, so we won’t be needing your system.”

ABC (and any other media) will distort the facts to support the anti-gun, anti-Second Amendment lunatics. The media is on the payroll of the DNC.

I've never shot anyone either and I also hope I never have to.

The two incidents in which I was threatened with serious harm were both resolved non-violently just by the display of my gun without any shots being fired. I think the vast majority of those 2 million cases each year of a gun being used to deter a crime are probably resolved the same way. Just showing the bad guy(s) that you're armed often ends the threat.

Seems to me that there is an entire page of the American Rifleman devoted to this each week...

Wow. You must have used an evil assault bullet and had all of the victims in a perfect line. :-)

Actually, this is probably a request for a John Stossel story. No surprise there. Stossel’s their “resident conservative” — and a good one.

Stossel was the first person I thought of when I saw the thread title. He'll do a good job with this story. In no way does he toe the liberal line for ABC. His book, "Give Me a Break" should be in every Freeper's library.

When I was in college, we got rid of the Jehovah’s Witnesses pretty quickly. When they would show up, we’d invite them in to play Dungeons and Dragrons with us. “We’ve got a fifth-level magic user that the DM was running as an NPC that you could play.” They never came back...

I have a surplus 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser army rifle that will put a 140 grain FMJ bullet through 2- 12" maple tree trunks and still keep going off into the wild blue yonder. I don't know how many bad guy bodies that equals, but if I am ever attacked by a gang of them all lined up in a nice straight row I could find out.

BTW, before I get any well intentioned warnings about firing stray bullets into the wild blue yonder, I fired at the trees approximately 100 yards away from a position that assured the bullet would impact the other side of the deep hollow behind my house. I live way out in the mountains and have a home-made shooting range in my back yard with a backstop made of oak logs and dirt. Weather permitting, I can shoot for fun and practice any time I feel like it, and I reload about 95% of the ammo I shoot.
