The Greening of Gingrich (Newt joins the ecotard chorus)
Human Events ^ | April 10, 2007 | Amanda B. Carpenter

Posted on 04/10/2007 1:19:25 PM PDT by xjcsa

In a heavily hyped debate – one that environmentalist Democrats hoped would be a “smack down” on Republicans -- former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich disappointed them and conservatives alike when he declared that human activity was causing the Earth to warm.

The concession was made in a debate on global warming with Sen. John Kerry (D.-Mass.) today on Capitol Hill that was sponsored by the Brookings Institution and the RAND Corporation.

In his first portion of allotted time Gingrich said there were two undisputed areas of scientific consensus on global warming: that the earth is getting hotter and the warming had been caused by human activity.

At one point, Kerry asked Gingrich what he would say to conservatives like Sen. James Inhofe (R.-Okla.) who do not believe global warming is caused by human activity. Gingrich said, "The evidence is sufficient that we should move to the most effective possible steps to reduce carbon."

“We should be moving to develop all kinds of new green technology,” Gingrich said. He challenged Kerry to find market-based solutions to reduce carbon emission instead of increasing environmental regulations.

“Regulation and litigation are the least effective ways of getting solutions,” the former Speaker said. “Reshaping markets with incentives are the fastest way.”

Kerry argued that environment laws drafted with help from the United Nations have been successful.

Kerry said the laws were “needed to create the leverage and the market so they would go out and invest in the technology because they don’t invest without it.” Government regulation, he said “is the only way to invite people to make that investment.”

“We are not arguing bureaucracy and regulation. We are arguing whether putting a price on carbon is bureaucracy.”

Kerry said it was not. “This is not bureaucracy. You set the standard the market will set the price,” he said. “We all live in a world where we don’t pay for the cost. We don’t pay for the loss of fish, we don’t pay for the lost of these species. None of that is priced into the goods today.”

Before launching into his initial speech, Gingrich endorsed the book Kerry had co-authored with his wife Teresa Heinz Kerry "This Moment on Earth.".

“This is excellent, this is a very good book,” he said. “I would commend this book to anyone who wants to see local leadership make a difference.” Gingrich said he didn’t agree with “about 60% of it” but would urge others to “read it because it’s an example of individual local leadership against the odds.”

Gingrich’s concession was expected in many news circles as part of his long-shot strategy to run for President in 2008. He has said since last year that he would make a decision to run or not sometime in the fall of this year. He is planning to release a new book, "Contract with the Earth" this November that he co-wrote with conservationist Terry Maples.

Yesterday, in his weekly email newsletter “Winning the Future” Gingrich said that September 27 would be “Solutions Day.” This is to honor the 13th anniversary of his 1994 “Contract with America.”

Last week, Gingrich called the Spanish language a “ghetto language.” Immediately after the mishap, he recorded an extensive apology, in Spanish, directed to the Hispanic community that made available on YouTube. Last month, he revealed to Focus on the Family’s James Dobson that he had an extramarital affair on Dobson’s radio show.

In January, Gingrich appeared at a hearing conducted by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to talk about how to stabilize Iraq.

[I read that Hart died at his storyboard ]

Yes, I was going to write that but for some reason couldn’t bring the word ‘storyboard’ to mind at the time.

Pookie18’s thread has a bunch of tribute posts from other cartoonists on it, very nice.

Finally, many of my FRiends are beginning to see that Tom Delay's recent book told the truth about the former Speaker. He's brilliant, but completely un-anchored in principled beliefs and tends to lurch from pillar to post!!!

Even back in 1994 he exhibited GANG-GREEN sympathies and seemed to buy into that old horse poopoo that Teddy Roosevelt was some sort of EnvironMentalista. TR wasn't even a constitutionalist. He believed, contrary to everyone from the founders to contemporary leaders of his time, that if the constitution didn't forbid it, the POTUS was authorized to just DO IT!!!

The GANG-GREENERs of today like to claim TR was one of them and co-opt another Republican to their ruthless, remorseless, relentless jaugernaut!!! (Just like they now do with Arnold the Spoiler!)

We are off topic here but perhaps can interject a bit of religiousness into Gore’s world. Things like telling the truth.

I always have been amazed at the talent it takes to turn out a funny cartoon day after day. You’ve GOT to have an active mind.

Perhaps Gore should have gone into cartooning, lol.

Debating the zombie Kerry was an opportunity for Newt to hit a grand slam homerun. Instead, Newt dug a grave and hopped in.

We can foundly remember Newt for his charge up Congressional hill in 1994 and destroying the rat enemy. But now he’s Humpty Dumpty, and all the king’s men can’t put him together again.

I’d write poem or epitaph to bury the old guy, but it’s just not in me tonight. Newt, we hardly knew you.....

Newt has been suspect to me since the time he went on the RUSH Limbaugh show and said he would oppose a Clinton tax package and caved the next day. RUSH just had him on his show for the first time a few weeks ago after Newt’s dis of him.

I didn't hear the show today but will listen later to see if it came up...

Thanks! Brilliant.

I’ve loved Newt for years- while not always liking him. I started wondering WTH he was thinking during Katrina..but still thought...well he might be good at the State Dept someday..

What an idiotic idea THAT was. What was I thinking?

Never mind- I guess I wasn’t thinking:) He has really lost it this time. I’m telling you- when politicians get out of touch with AMERICANS- something really bad takes root in them.

Newt never was on my list.

A few months ago Newt was shopping himself around as a non-aspirant who would be "above the fray" and able to provide the sort of cover fire that the Republicans (independent of candidate) desperately needs. I remember being excited to see him cast in this roll because there aren"t any dhimmis who can beat him in an argument.

Now it looks like the Newt has turned into a toad. I no longer understand what his agenda is (unless it is slash & burn politics against his fellow Republicans in order to somehow position himself as a presidential candidate), but whatever his agenda is, it is turning off those who once represented his base.

Newt - croak off!

"This is nothing new; Newt has held this position for a while."

From my post yesterday:

Newt is a realist and is trying to head the "central planners" off at the pass because they have spent many years indoctrinating people and too many of them now believe the Chicken-Little alarmist lies. Perception is reality.

Luckily, we now have an opening to turn the tables on the eco-wackos, and convince the people to go for Newt's "pleasure" solution over Kerry's "pain" solution - which is how Newt brilliantly phrased it yesterday.

I think that the fact that they picked CO-2 in the atmosphere to use as their culprit behind "anthropomorphic-induced warming" (human-induced], means that they shot themselves in the foot. The FASTEST way to reduce CO-2 in the atmosphere is to build more nuclear power plants. And if we're to be able to bring nuclear power plants on line as fast as France, China and Russia do, (5 years) that means we will have to roll back our draconian "taxes and regulations" which were deliberately designed to thwart the building of more plants.

April 5 2007 Kerry, Gingrich announce climate showdown- HERE

Excerpt: ".... Gingrich, the architect of the “Contract with America” that led to the Republican takeover of the House in 1994, recently teamed up with conservationist Terry Maple to author A Contract with the Earth. Like his Contract with America, A Contract with the Earth, due out Nov. 1, 2007, is based on a 10-point “contract” calling for a bipartisan approach to solving climate issues.

“America should focus its energy policy in four areas,” Gingrich writes on his website. “Basic research for a new energy system, incentives for conservation, more renewable resources, and environmentally sound development of fossil fuels. “The lengthy process of environmental planning must be made more efficient and cost effective,” he adds.

John Kerry, Newt Gingrich Take On Environment, Each Other
Foxnews.com Greg Simmons

The global warming debate has been heating up in Washington lately, but reached new heights Tuesday when partisan heavies Sen. John Kerry and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich went head-to-head over the issue on Capitol Hill.

What might have been a surprise to some people watching the debate was that Kerry and Gingrich were cordial, not at each other's throats, and actually agreed and said so several times on the key point at hand: that climate change is a problem and something needs to be done.

In their opening statements, both men made reference to the prize-fight billing, but downplayed any expectations of animosity.

"I'm sure we're going to have an interesting dialogue about this," Gingrich said with a grin during his opening remarks.

Part of what made the debate enticing was the political backdrop: Kerry was the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee and remains a Bush administration critic; and Gingrich led the conservative revolution that swept Congress in 1994 and might be positioning himself as a candidate for the presidency in 2008.

But how they said they would tackle the global warming problem is where they differed.

Talking from a podium in the Russell Senate Office Building, Gingrich argued that a program including cash prizes, targeted tax cuts and other economic incentives will lure business entrepreneurs to develop technology to tackle the climate problem. He said that type of program would be faster than a bureaucratic government program because it will avoid the rush of special interests to avoid regulation and costly litigation.

Kerry said he favors government regulation first because markets, while they work, cannot act fast enough to tackle the looming problem he pointed to frequently: reaching the "tipping point" level of greenhouse gases of 450 parts per million. Scientists believe that level of greenhouse gases would seriously hurt worldwide economies. Kerry also advocated a so-called cap-and-trade program that would set economy-wide carbon emission limits.

Gingrich began first with a concession to his opponent. Holding the new book by Kerry and his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, Gingrich said, "This is a very good book. As a clearly right-wing reader, I would commend the book" as one that shows examples of local leadership on environmental issues.

"I would agree with about 60 percent of this book," he added.

Kerry of Massachusetts also took a friendly stance in his opening remarks before turning to the debate, which was sponsored by the New York University Robert Wagner School of Public Service, the Brookings Institution and the Cato Institute.

"While I don't have his book in hand, and I don't know what it's about, I've always enjoyed every dialogue he and I have ever had," Kerry said, calling the global-warming face-off the "environmental version of the Lincoln-Douglas debates."

Gingrich said he will be pushing for a way to deal with climate change that is not heavy on regulation a point on which he criticized Kerry's plan.

"I want to suggest that we need a new science- and technology-based, entrepreneurial, market-oriented and locally led environmentalism," Gingrich said.

Gingrich raised some discrepancies among the science that has led to the current data on climate change, but when asked pointedly about science doubters, like Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., Gingrich strongly held the case that climate change is a problem.

"What would you say to Sen. Inhofe and others in the Senate who are resisting even science? What's your message to them here today?" Kerry asked.

"My message, I think is that the evidence is sufficient that we should move towards the most effective possible steps to reduce carbon loading in the atmosphere "

"And do it urgently, now?" Kerry interrupted.

"Urgently, yes," Gingrich said. [[[Yes- we have urgently needed to go to nuclear energy, etc., for many years but the environmentalist-whacko base of the DemocRAT party have stopped us cold. But Nuclear power is the only option if we head towards a low carbon, hydrogen economy - a hydrogen economy requires vast amounts of energy which only nuclear can provide. "75% of France's energy supplies are derived from nuclear generation. ..concerns voiced throughout the industry is the dearth of skilled technicians and engineers, the result of an industry perceived for years as having no future. Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials regularly cite access to qualified staff as a prerequisite to approving a ramp-up of the industry. "There are still quite a few challenges facing the industry, starting with the fact that they haven't built one of these plants in a long time. .." 10/16/06 HERE ]]]

But Gingrich also said that up to now, conservatives have been slow to loathe with environmental policy because, he said, "For most of the last 30 years, the environment has a been a powerful emotional tool for bigger government and higher taxes. And therefore if you're a conservative, if you hear these arguments, you know what's coming next."

"So even though it might be the right thing to do, you might end up fighting it because you don't want the bigger government and the higher taxes."

Gingrich said there must be a "green conservatism." [Newt knows that there already is a Green Conservatism]

"There has to be a willingness to stand up and say, alright, here's the right way to solve these as seen by our values system," Gingrich said. [See above]

Gingrich said there needs to be more money available in the form of incentives to find better ways of bringing forward new technology.

"Regulation and litigation are the least effective" ways to get change.

Kerry said he's not against a market-based approach, but he believes that the nation's corporations and international governments will not take more environmentally friendly measures without U.S. government response.

"Ladies and gentleman, this is a moral obligation. [[[ - Yes. Kerry knows it's not nice to fool 'Mother Gaia' - ]]]

It's one in which we can [make] money. [[[ Ahhhh yes - "the money" - as in "follow the money."]]]

That's what those business leaders realize. We need to show the leadership. It's the only way to get China and India to participate, and that's why you have to take this with a global pricing of carbon certainly economy wide in the United States to start with and we need to offer the leadership."

Kerry argued that Gingrich's position doesn't allow for fast enough action. [[[ Here comes the "bum's rush" to get emotion-driven fools to "act fast" (before their brains - if any - have a chance to get into gear), and agree to the harmful and painful "solutions" that big government central planners have in mind to separate the useful idiots from their money and other resources. ]]]

"He takes the consensus of the U.N. report, but then essentially says, what we need to do is encourage the marketplace to go out and respond, and to unleash science, to unleash technology," Kerry said.

He contended that Gingrich's solution won't deal with "the crises that we have to respond to immediately, quickly," and added that Gingrich's stance is "like saying, 'Barry Bonds, go investigate steroids.' "
