Duke Failed to See Gravity of Rape Case, Report Says
NEW YORK TIMES ^ | May 9, 2006 | KAREN W. ARENSON

Posted on 04/11/2007 5:55:05 PM PDT by hophead

Duke University officials, from the campus police to the highest administrative levels, failed to grasp the seriousness of an accusation that white lacrosse players raped a black woman at a party in March and did not respond quickly enough, said an outside report released yesterday. The report, by William G. Bowen, a former president of Princeton University, and Julius Chambers, a former director of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund Inc., cited "a gap in communications that is extraordinary," noting that the Duke police force had failed to alert administration officials to the racial component of the case.

Are the Duke lacross players going to get an apology from those quoted in this article?

Perhaps they failed to grasp “it” because there was NO “it”...I hope the 3 guys end up owning Duke!

An interesting line from the story.

“Dr. Chambers, who was chancellor of North Carolina Central University from 1993 to 2001, said in the news conference that one aspect that most disturbed him was that Duke officials had not looked deeper into the accusations.”

Dr. Chambers being a former director of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund Inc., was the other author of this report.

He is right. It should have been better investigated.

“It’s not the guilt or innocence of the players, it’s the seriousness of the charge that matters.”

I can imagine that they’re going to really blow some steam when they get their first phone call asking for alumni donations...

Or do you think Duke is actually wise enough to know better and just take them off the list to begin with?

I’d like to see the Duke 88 take out a full page ad apologizing for their rush to judgment, for their presumption of guilt. I hope none of them were teaching criminal law or criminology.

The Duke 88 should be on the receiving end of a defamation lawsuit.

Well stated. There was no rape by those she accused.

There might have been rape at some other time and place, but not by the lacrosse players and not in that house. The DNA of five men were found on Crystal. But apparently Nifong preferred to keep hidden their identities - payoff? - and charge men he knew were innocent.

>>The report also criticized administration officials as being too heavily influenced by Durham police reports that the woman “kept changing her story and was not credible” and that “this will blow over.”<<

This is by far the best (i.e. most idiotic) line in the article. It shows EXACTLY what the liberal mindset is: ignore the truth and view it through the best liberal political view.

Toilet paper has a higher ranking than the filthy NYT. This is just more total BS trying to spin their way out of their attacks on the Duke students and support for the criminally-corrupt prosecutor.

Choke on it NYT!

Thank you for posting this bigoted blast from the past from the New York Times. It translates as "who cares who did what to whom? We only care about the racial angles in the case."
