A new Republican presidential poll shows former mayor beating McCain; Clinton tops the Democratic roster
WASHINGTON - Rudolph Giuliani navigated the first choppy waters of his campaign to sit atop a new Republican presidential poll yesterday that shows him easily beating one-time front-runner John McCain, the Arizona senator who tumbled to third place over Iraq.
But the Los Angeles Times-Bloomberg poll also suggests conservative skeptics are still casting about for an alternative to the moderate Giuliani, with a second-place showing by someone who isn't even in the race - actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson.
On the Democratic side, New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton still leads comfortably over Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and former senator John Edwards among Democratic primary voters.
But in a New York head-to-head faceoff for the White House, Clinton trails Giuliani, 48 percent to 42 percent. And she only barely beats a weakened McCain.
Giuliani won support from 29 percent of Republican primary voters surveyed, followed by Thompson with 15 percent and McCain with 12 percent.

McCain is just about done.
And 7 out of 10 Republicans, according to this and other polls are still not on the Rudy bandwagon.
FYI...
With McCain fading and many GOP primary voters still looking for an alternative to Rudy the conditions couldn’t be much better for Thompson to jump in.
They’d stay home long before they’d vote for Hillary.
Obviously Rudy is doing fine, in spite of the abortion issue. Your post makes no sense.
To bad it’s NOT “as New York goes so goes the country”
Giuliani still pulling close to 1/3 of the voters.
Don't feed the troll.
BWAHAHAHAHAHA!. You are joking right?
Why are Julie Annie, Hitlery and Osama getting most of the press? What ever happened to Mitt?
I think he's off hunting with his buddy Castro.
Now there's a nutty reponse.
Hillary will play that card and win over many of them.
Bump!!
He hasn’t defined himself yet IMO. Agree or disagree with Rudy, you know what he is. Same with McCain. Mitt’s a bit amorphous at this point. I think he’ll pop some after the debates. He’s very appealing and people will see that.
Rudy's still leading yes. But zarf is right that he's stumbled over the abortion issue. I gotta admit, it concerns me greatly. While I haven't left, I am not as happy to be on the Rudy bandwagon as I was a month ago.
I'm kinda stuck between "dang, Rudy's the only one" and "dang, Rudy's the only one."
I just don't see any of the other current announced candidates, with the possible exception of Mitt, pulling this off.
Thompson could change things if he enters the race. However, I am less confident about his ability to win than many of our fellow FReepers.
You know, that caught my eye too. Too bad its false and misleading.(Which you find when you read the entire article.)
It infers that 'in New York' Rudy is leading Hillary, but that ain't so. The reality is it means in the National Poll taken, between the two New Yorkers, Rudy is leading.
In New York State Hillary is still leading Rudy, and per the latest March Sierra Poll, by 12%. Quinnipiac had her leading by 10% in Feb.
