BILBAO - A married couple who are deputies with the Popular Party announced they will give up politics after years of threats from ETA.
Ramón Gómez and Vanessa Vélez said they are to work in the private sector and look after their 10-month-old daughter, the Spanish daily El Mundo reported on Friday.
They said their decision was motivated after discovering ETA intended to kill them if Spain's most notorious terrorist Iñaki de Juana Chaos died while on hunger strike.
Amid widespread controversy, De Juana Chaos, who was convicted of killing 25 people, gave up the hunger strike after he was granted permission to end his hunger strike under house arrest.
Police discovered paperwork during recent raids on the homes of ETA suspects which suggested the PP couple were a target.
Gomez was a PP deputy in San Sebastián and his wife was the mayor of Lasarte.
Both had been followed by ETA and had to have bodyguards.
Other ETA targets include a police officer and Pedro Miguéliz Txofo, a witness in a trial of ETA suspects.
Txofo had had his bodyguard withdrawn recently.
Bump
Thank you for the ping, Incorrigible.
ETA has taken profit of 3/11 to reconstruct its infrastructure, the terrorist group is not tackled by the Socialists, which might have contributed so much to the cover-up. Even ETA’s political branch can now present lists to the elections, which will endow them with the so sweet public funding and local information on citizens to carry out their extortion activities.
This is democracy Basque-style, where terrorism is a continuation of politics by other means.
