Gay rodeo shows South Florida how West was fun

By Elizabeth Baier

South Florida Sun-Sentinel

April 15, 2007

Davie -- They wore Wrangler jeans and Stetson hats. Some sported decorative belt buckles to boast of former rodeo triumphs.

But at Saturday's Sunshine Stampede, some of the spectators and participants also waved a symbol not typically associated with rodeos -- the rainbow flag.

What's a gay rodeo without a little color?

Thousands of people converged on the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds for the state's second gay rodeo, hosted by the Florida Gay Rodeo Association. The Florida group is one of the newest members of the International Gay Rodeo Association, which has more than 4,500 members in 33 associations throughout the United States and Canada.

The amateur association was established to promote gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Western lifestyles, not necessarily to be a statement against traditional rodeos, according to organizers.

Throughout the day, about 120 contestants, gay and straight, competed in classic rodeo events, like calf roping and bull riding, and more offbeat contests, like goat dressing and steer decorating. They will continue the competition today, with hopes of winning a belt buckle, the rodeo's grand prize, and accumulating points toward the national championship.

Roberto Lopez and Roy Faircloth, of Fort Lauderdale, competed Saturday for the second time in the goat-dressing contest. The two worked to get a pair of white jockey-style underwear over a goat's rear hooves.

"It's just fun," said Lopez, 35. "We feel accepted here, like everyone is a comrade."

Jason Smith likened the ambience of the event to a country song. The 40-year-old Fort Lauderdale resident sat in the bleachers with friends Jim Durhan and Larry Gureski, also of Fort Lauderdale.

"There's so much emotion and passion," Smith said. "It's about regular, down-to-earth people, doing what they love."

The difference, of course, is that real cowboys wear pants under their *chaps.*

Made me think of this:

Gay cowboys eating pudding.

I'm pretty sure steer/goat dressing competitions go on at regular rodeos too. I just wonder why it's necessary to hold a separate rodeo? Why can't they just sign up to participate in a real rodeo?

What the heck is going on in Texas?

Maybe this is stereotype thinking but I always thought of Texas MEN as MEN - the majority being MASCULINE MEN.

Is this becoming the new gay mecca?

What’s even more fun for these freaks is having HETEROSEXUAL join in on the laughter and charm them into thinking homosexuals are really “okay”, “fun” loving people. People fall for this ALL THE TIME.
_______________

You: Says a lot about the gay folks you know. On the other hand, the gays/lesbians I have known over the years have been, for the most part, okay and fun loving people, as much as anyone else.

Of course, none of them were trying to put tighty whities on a goat :)

AH, charmed by perversion!

Next you’ll be buying swamp land in Florida.

Guve em time ... they’ll be putting panties on anything furry walking on four legs. To be gay is to be queer - and NOT in a flattering way.

“Queer and gay used to be interchangeable terms. I would say that is less the case today. Queer is associated with pervert more than gay.”

To be “gay” is to be “queer”.

To be “gay” or “queer” is to be a PERVERT.

There is NOTHING normal about being a HOMOSEXUAL.

Geesh!

Male parts just aren’t designed to connect to other male parts. Female parts just aren’t designed to connect to other female parts. Same sex doesn’t produce children. Get it? Never mind. YOU be the “gay” or “queer” cheerleader.

Looks to me like there are some

queer, gay, cheerleaders here!

Or perhaps they are “gay”!

Either way, they’re disgusting.

No thanks. I'll just accept that God made some people different from me and leave it at that.

Animals had better be on guard ... if humans can’t get it right on what gender to connect to ... animals are fair game too!!!

That is the most pig-ignorant comment I've ever read...

...Even from you.

Bestiality is just a hop and a skip from homosexuality in the pantheon of mental illness.

C'mon, Junior, get with the program!

LOL!

If this was only true!

Why we’d have TWO Adams and TWO Eves.

Apparently we don’t have the same god. MY God calls this “unnatural” and an abomination. Even from a secular perspective, the parts just don’t fit. Need I add no children are possibly with this hideous “union”?

Since I am not under the Jewish theocracy and Christ came to this earth ... I leave the ultimate punishment up to Him. Till then I acknowledge His truth and point it out to people who don’t know better. You should get to know Him ... .

There was a Gay Rodeo held last year in Odessa, Texas. Get ready, this is going to become more common.

There are many state gay rodeo organizations/associations.... This apparently has been going on for a few years now and they attract some national sponsors.

Here’s a few state listings via google:
