Va. Tech Gunman Named

By Michael Shear and Debbi Wilgoren Washington Post Staff Writers Tuesday, April 17, 2007; 9:36 AM

Virginia Tech officials today identified the Virginia Tech student who killed 32 people and then himself on the Blacksburg campus yesterday as 23-year-old Cho Seung-Hui of Centreville.

Cho was a South Korean native who had immigrated to this country, the university announced on its Web site this morning. He was a senior majoring in English, and lived in a dorm on campus, officials said.

Any particular comments that stick out?

There are around 200 in total, so which ones make your point? Or is it the article?

I don’t know why you pinged me to this thread, but please don’t. Is it not obvious who the thread was originally about? Of course it is. Bait someone else. It looks like there are still troublemakers here posting loads of fun for the morons at the DU to quote. This thread should have been deleted long ago. At least many the comments I was referring to were deleted.

And see I left the word “it” out the last post.
Because I got in a hurry which is what my post

Whoa there, pal.

You've already gotten some comments on the other thread, but at the time the post on this thread was written, for which your response was a reply had not gotten to Vision's posts yet. All there was was a question for which posts you were referring to (obviously Vision's).

Isn’t Ishmael the progenitor of what would eventually become the Muslim world?

He was also the son of Hagar, Sarah’s handmaid. In the book of Genesis, Hagar was sent away with the young Ishmael, and almost died from lack of water, when it was revealed to her by an angel.

It’s got lots of levels of meaning that could be built up.

In the Islamic story, it was Ishmael who was set to be offered up, but God wouldn’t let the knife cut him.

Ishmael is rejected. Or, Ishmael is the true favored son. (counting on your POV)

Ishmael in Moby Dick is the last survivor.

There is also a sect of Shia Islam that are called the Ismailis, because of a dispute about the succession of who should be Imam. Ismail was the son of the 6th Imam, who died before his father (or was sent into hiding and declared dead to protect him). I read something about the Assassin sect during the crusades being Ismailis. The Druzes trace back to this as well from what I understand.

There was Ismail Pasha, involved with the Suez Canal and the moving Egypt into modernization in the 1800s.

There was the Shah Ismail, around 1500 in Iran.

A couple of interesting Wiki disambiguation pages

Lots of speculation.

I speculate he preferred playing a middle eastern character on Battlefield 2.

Occam’s razor, and all that.

Read comment 401 again.

Obviously, you still don't realize that the question posed, was simply a question. You didn't give any particular posts, just a link to the entire article which had around 285 posts in total. The question was asking which ones in particular you were referring to. The question was rather straightforward.

At least one of those killed was another of East Asian descent (Chinese), though he could have selected non-Koreans.

You've probably seen the on-site video that captures the sound of his gunshots. They were so rapid that it doesn't seem that he "selected" anyone. Surviving students describe Cho as simply entering classrooms and firing, or forcing eveyone to stand up and then shooting them in the head. There is a lot of speculation about what might be the shooter's motives, but there is one obvious explanation that hasn't been discussed: he was a paranoid schizophrenic. Certainly, all the descriptions of the man fit the bill, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schizophrenia#Criteria_.28signs_and_symptoms.29

And he was on the right age - early to mid-20s. Since the note left behind hasn't been released in full, there is no way to tell if he discusses delusional beliefs, but it does seem that he had elaborate beliefs about being persecuted by certain groups.

There may end up being no further explanation than that he was a young man with a major illness who should have been prescribed medication or institutionalized long ago.

The person who really deserves our attention is Liviu Lebrescu, the 76-year-old Holocaust survivor and Engineering professor who threw himself in front of the shooter, yelling for his students to get out of the room. He managed to hold the gunman at bay, although he was shot five to six times, being killed. All the students survived, getting out the windows of the second-floor classroom, due to the Professor's sacrifice.

No No NO...you guys have it all wrong about the “Ismail Ax” thing...he actually wrote “1 small Ax” as a reminder to buy an axe for the killings, but apparently he couldn’t find one in time, so he just used the guns. ;-)

Seriously, though...did you guys read his scripts over at Smoking Gun? I think this guy was molested as a child. It would explain a lot.

Thoughts???

This unsubstantiated! Repeat: Unsubstantiated!

According to a Korean friend, Korean American papers are reporting that Cho’s parents have committed . Do we have anyone in the Korean community here who can confirm this rumor? My heart goes out to them regardless.

To: P.O.E.

a whole bunch of people, often kids, have done this over the years.

I think it might get classified as a “narcissistic personality disorder”

A study was done that found these common denominators:

“Students who engaged in school-based attacks typically did not ‘just snap’ and then engage in impulsive or random acts of targeted school violence,” the Secret Service researchers wrote. “Instead, the attacks examined under the Safe School Initiative appeared to be the end result of a comprehensible process of thinking and behavior: behavior that typically began with an idea, progressed to the development of a plan, moved on to securing the means to carry out the plan and culminated in an attack. This is a process that potentially may be knowable or discernible from the attacker’s behaviors and communications.”

Other key findings of the Secret Service study:

* Prior to most incidents, other people knew about the attacker’s idea and/or plan to attack.
* There is no accurate or useful “profile” of students who engaged in targeted school violence.
* Most attackers had difficulty coping with significant losses or personal failures. Moreover, many had considered or attempted suicide.
* Many attackers felt bullied, persecuted or injured by others prior to the attack.
* Most attackers had access to and had used weapons prior to the attack.
* In many cases, other students were involved in some capacity.
* Despite prompt law enforcement responses, most shooting incidents were stopped by means other than law enforcement intervention. The end came through suicide in about one-eighth of the shootings.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18175525/page/2/

I suspect it’s also related to cases like the man who went into a San Diego McDonalds a number of years ago and shot and killed many people before dying.

And a guy named Mark Essex in New Orleans many years ago.

Sometimes they use politics as a rationality, but mostly they are miserable, angry people who don’t realize that a lot of the misery happens because of how they relate to others. Thus the hyperfocus on self.

I told someone today this is the ultimate emo trip. Some truth to that snidity.

First of all, thanks for putting together all the information you’ve provided.

I heard on the radio today something that struck a chord of truth. There’s something of megalomania in many of these cases - the ego-focus you speak of. This observation later turned out to be prophetic when info he sent to NBC became public.

Your post was great. Dennis Prager today pointed out that criminal often have extremely high self esteem. Your post bears that out.

They feel that their pain is of more importance than the lives of others.

In fact, I don’t think a lot of them see others as truly as real the way they see themselves. We are just characters in a videogame....we may cause them pain, but we aren’t truly alive to them.

Sad, isn’t it. And that leads to his writings. I don’t think any of us will be able to really understand them. Because they are the rantings of evil.

I have posted this many times in the last two days. We can never be totally safe. We cannot buy into the current craze “fix-every-problem-itis”. The only true security is with God.
