Secret service officer shoots two agents at White House
Sydney Morning Herald ^ | April 18, 2007 | Reuters

Two Secret Service officers were injured after a gun held by another Secret Service officer accidentally fired inside the White House gate, according to a spokesman, Darrin Blackford.

Their injuries are non-life threatening, the spokesman said.

One officer suffered a shrapnel wound to the face, and the other was wounded in the leg.

They were taken to George Washington Hospital.

At the time, President George W Bush was on a trip to Blacksburg, Virginia, to attend a ceremony at Virginia Tech university following yesterday's shooting rampage.

"It appears that at approximately 2.10pm (0410 AEST) there was an accidental discharge of a service issued weapon, which occurred inside the Southwest Gate at a security post near the White House," Blackford said.

Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House, Lafayette Park across the street from the White House and other nearby walkways were all shut down to pedestrian traffic due to the incident.

Many police vehicles were in the area.

The shooter was a loner with a troubled past.

I wonder how much more we’ll learn about this.

No matter how hard we try and train, AD’s do happen, even among people at this level. That’s why we hammer procedure into a new shooters head until they are sick of it.

I’m wondering, did he shoot more than once?

One gets hit in the face.

One gets hit in the leg.

What in the world?

So we can now say “Guns kill people, not people kill people”?

My instructor drummed into me that there are almost no "Accidental Discharges". The vast majority are "Negligent Discharges". The only exception being a mechanical failure that caused the gun to fire without it being touched (which I've never heard of happening)

For a NG to occur with people injured, the gun owner had to have violated a safety rule

I’m thinking this was less of an “accidental discharge”, and more of a “negligent discharge”. And likely also a CLM.

You beat me to it.

AD is used far too frequently.

Sounds suspiciously like two shots unless they were demostrating a Lewinsky. Were they goofing off instead of attending to duties? Why was the gun out in the first place? At least one person there needs a pink slip.

They should all be demoted to meter maid duty.

Bureaucrats prefer it being said that one of their people had an “accident” rather than was “negligent” (the bureaucrat’s “n-word”), because negligence reflects on the hierarchy

It’s time to make the Secret Service and the White House a ‘gun-free zone’ . For the children.

I like that term, Negligent Discharge. It really is more correct. Although I have seen some that could be classified as truly accidental but it took some pretty screwed up circumstances. You would be amazed at what I’ve seen happen with really highly trained and aware individuals.

Then their was the Sheriff’s Deputy that was so fat that he got his weapon hung up on the steering wheel of his car while trying to exit quickly and got a nice leg wound to take home. I never heard how he tells the story but I doubt it’s the way the rest of us do!
