Navarrette: Will Gonzales get a fair hearing?

Navarrette: Will Gonzales get a fair hearing? By Ruben Navarrette Jr. Special to CNN SAN DIEGO, California (CNN) -- Details, details. The critics of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales are absolutely sure of his guilt in the matter of the fired U.S. attorneys. They're just not sure what he's guilty of.

Well, they had better figure it out fast. Gonzales testifies Thursday before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

In an op-ed Sunday for The Washington Post, Gonzales admitted that he had "created confusion" with recent statements about the firings but insisted, "nothing improper occurred."

He wrote that he directed his former deputy chief of staff Kyle Sampson to initiate the process, that he knew it was occurring and that he approved the final recommendations -- but "did not make decisions about who should or should not be asked to resign."

That won't satisfy the critics. Nothing will, absent Gonzales' head. To get it, they keep changing their line of attack.

First, the critics said that Gonzales didn't understand the difference between being the president's personal lawyer and being attorney general. Then, they said he had orchestrated a purge of dissidents to further political goals. Then, they said he lied to Congress. Then, they said he lied to the media. Then, they said he had been a bad manager. Then, they said he bungled the explanation of what happened and created the appearance of a scandal where there may not have been one in the first place.

Right, a fair hearing, that’s a good one! This will be by a bunch of moonbats who still aren’t sure Bush did not fly the planes into the WTC himself.

Gonzalez has bumbled this like a first-class idiot. He is way over his head in the AG post.

A fair hearing from the Dimocrat star chamber ... sure ... there should NOT be a hearing at all in the first place. Why Bush and company are giving these “people” the time of day on this issue is beyond me

I think he is in over his head too.,However if it were me I would pay them back by charging Jefferson and others who are breaking the law and hiding in their Congressional offices. I would be investigating Pelosi and Reid and their labd deals and such.

Stop pussyfooting around and get on the offense.

Will Gonzales get a fair hearing?

At the rate Gonzales is shooting himself in the feet at the Senate hearing, he doesn't have any toes left.

His display has been pathetic. He has raised significant questions about his competency for the position he holds.

Will he get a fair hearing...???

I haven't been watching it but from what I hear he refuses to stand up for himself.

If that's true, he won't get a fair hearing but...
it will be what he deserves.

You’d expect fairness from the Republicans at least, but nope. They’re just as bad as the Dems. Can’t imagine what THEY are thing.

Who the heck is running the DOJ? He's bumbling and stumbling and contradicting himself at every turn.
It's embarrassing (and painful) to watch!

I don't think it is in question anymore.

1) US Attorneys serve at the pleasure of the President.
2) US Attorneys can be replaced for any reason, or for no reason.
3) What in the heck is an “improper reason?”

The problem is, yes, it IS what he deserves. But one apparently capable subordinate has already resigned over this. Worse, the country has suffered and the conservative cause has suffered because he is such an incompetent jerk.

Come on. For these guys, ethnicity trumps everything. Gonzalez could be a drooling loony and Navarette would defend him. What's important to both of them is that Mexicans get power over the gringos and hold it.

And Gonzalez isn't exactly a "right winger" anyway.

In addition to the U.S. Attorneys, I count four resignations so far resulting from this fiasco. Sampson, Goodling, Battle, and the San Diego FBI Chief. And the guy they were trying to get confirmed for Arkansas (Griffin) may never be a U.S. Attorney given the mood. That’s a lot of stained careers—and all perfectly avoidable.
