Alec Baldwin apologizes after fiery rant at daughter, 11 [breaks silence]

Alec Baldwin issued an apology on Friday for unleashing a volcanic tirade at his 11-year-old daughter and blamed "certain people" for leaking the rant to US media.

The Oscar-nominated star of "The Departed" branded daughter Ireland a "rude, thoughtless, little pig" in a fiery voicemail message that emerged on celebrity websites on Thursday.

It is the latest twist to the bitter legal wrangling between Baldwin and ex-wife Kim Basinger over custody and visitation rights relating to Ireland. The couple split in 2001.

Baldwin's tirade was apparently triggered by Ireland's failure to switch her mobile phone on for a scheduled call with her father.

"Once again I've made an ass out of myself trying to get to a phone at a specific time," Baldwin says in the message. "I'm tired of playing this game with you. You have insulted me for the last time.

But, this is not about the child's interest.

That's another assumption.

This sentence was referring to the people who are profiting by this. But, this matter was already being handled by the courts, before the material was released.

The family court has breathtaking power, and I am sure you will find lists and lists of men here who will tell you that its almost extra-constitutional how much power this court has.

Folks going outside this process are attempting to stack the deck. It may be the "last" straw, but these fights are often a series of last straws. This could have and should stay where it is, this is not about taking it anywhere else either, so this is about manipulating the court itself by what ever means no matter who is hurt.

You seem to be claiming having an oar in this water, an inside source. You are welcome to that. Its not like your charge isn't obvious from the material released, otherwise you might have been inviting your own liability in this matter.

Still, unsourced claims like that are patently unfair. However, going past that.. is silly... because this guy's honor wasn't worth that much before this crap came out. I just can't stand him especially this last few years. But, even horses butts can need defending to protect things that are important.

Losing your temper with a child happens. But what he said during and after still doesn’t fix it. Why is he apologizing to the public and not saying that he is going to work harder on being there for his daughter.

Listening to the tape and the apology, it is all about him. His focus was that he’d made an ass of himself and it was her fault. I can have some empathy for the child that she may not want to talk to this “charm school dropout”.

I agree it was wrong for Kim Basinger to publish it, but who is to say she’s not a narcissist, just as Alec Baldwin is?

In the end, the child suffers. She either learns to feel justified for being self absorbed or she will only know to seek someone as abusive and self absorbed as her parents.

He is abusive, I think that’s what we are saying. He’s telling her that she deserves to be treated this way and that no one will love her unconditionally.

And every word he said was all about him.

Poor kid.

The other thought that occurred to me is that he was clear that he was angry with her mother and that he had to hurt his daughter as much as he felt hurt.

Parents make mistakes. A huge range of mistakes are fixable. This one could be, but based on her mother’s decision to air the onslaught, it’s not looking too good.

People do get angry and they yell. But most people have some ability to love.

That’s the difference. Alec Baldwin gave a rant that was about him. And what I heard is that he is narcissistic. A narcissist has a harder time to love, as he is all focused on covering for and overcompensating for his self hatred. He is about conditional love, which means that if she soothes his ego, all is right with the world.

That’s a far cry from the story of a good parent who lost it. The child gets punished, but the parent and child reconcile because there is love. There are hugs.

Did it sound to you like Alec Baldwin geniunely hugs his little girl?

I agree with what you said, but I would add that either the child becomes just like the parent or finds someone to submit to in an abusive situation.

There is at least one, Steven Baldwin, Alec’s brother.

Steven is a born-again Christian, serious about his faith. He is the polar opposite of his hedonistic, narcissistic, solpsistic, America-hating brother.

Steven is also an actor.

You can see him in the movie, “Six”.

A perfect example of the hard-core lib.

Anybody's fault but mine.

BOTH of these assholes are going to screw this kid up big-time with their selfishness and hatred.

I agree, but I bet Bassinger has been playing on his emotions for years. I bet you that the daughter is very spoiled and has been hearing so much negative things about her father from her mother that she is poisoned against him. This is in no way to condone what he did, but both parents are using their daughter negatively. I thought we here were all for both parents being able to see their daughter. How do we know that Kim is seriously keeping her daughter away from the phone just to piss Baldwin off? This is just bad all around. Maybe both parents need to lose visitations of the child.

“Alec Baldwin is the rude, thoughtless, little pig.”

You’ve got that right! I have always been of the mind that fathers of daughters should treat them with respect, as any gentleman would a lady. My husband has always done that with our daughter, and it’s worked out well so far. I don’t care how peeved Baldwin is with Kim, he should not take his frustrations out on a minor child. On more than one occasion, he’s shown himself to be a loud mouthed boor and certainly no gentleman.

......That’s her Dad: show some respect....

He is no longer her Dad. By refusing the phone calls she was delivering a message......”bug off”

It’s pretty obvious, he deserves no respect.

On Fox & Friends a few minutes ago, they said that Baldwin said that if people want to understand why he would tear into his daughter like this, they should buy and read his new book. So Baldwin is using this as an opportunity to plug his book.

On Hannity & Colmes last night, Comrade Colmes rushed to Baldwins defense, saying it was no big deal and essentially said that all parents yell at their kids like Baldwin did. Baldwin definitely has anger problems. Almost all week Colmes has said that V. Tech and the police should have recognized Cho`s anger problems and should have done something to protect the students from him. But he sees nothing amiss with Baldwins tirade and says it`s no big deal.

Characterizing his words as some form of appropriate discipline is like serving manure as "food" because it is organic.

I didn't say his words were appropriate discipline. I said that condemning this guy for using harsh language with his kid , especially when a private message is made public, will lead us down a road we should not be going, one where any parent is afraid to use stern language to their child, lest someone record it and broadcast it as a means of legal manipulation.

I am amazed at a lot of the responses here on this subject. People here must have had some incredibly lucky, perhaps sheltered lives if Baldwin's message for his daughter is so horrible to them that it automatically constitutes "violence" and "child abuse" and he should be locked up. Quite frankly, if this is the worst that this girl ever hears from her parents, then she is one lucky little kid.

We all know that Baldwin is a complete anti-American a-hole, and since I consider most leftists to be deranged, I wouldn't be shocked to find out that he was an abusive dad, but this recording doesn't prove a damn thing, and everyone thinking they know everything about this family's relationship and feeling entitled to pass holier-than-thou judgement on them based on a single recording is exactly why this situation bothers me. One day, someone will record you speaking harshly to your child in one way or another and the next thing you know CPS has taken your kids. Is that the society you want?

re: It’s hard to believe you think his abuse was less deplorable than the exposure of his abuse. If there was no abuse, there’d be no shame in hearing what he said.

excellent point!

It kept her out of the tattoo parlors and raves, so I’d say pretty well. I didn’t and couldn’t track and control every aspect of her life, but I wasn’t going with the “best friends forever” strategy of my ex, either. Parenting is like war; in many instances the ends DO justify the means.

He will get away with it because he is a ranting-raving liberal. If he had been a Republican, we would never hear the end of it.

"In a statement on his website, alecbaldwin.com, posted Friday, the actor said he had apologized to his daughter for his actions, suggesting that the stress of legal battles with Basinger had tipped him over the edge. "Naturally, it is not best for a parent to lose their temper with their child," Baldwin said. "Everyone who knows me privately knows that I have endured a great deal over the last several years in my custody litigation. "Everyone who knows me privately knows that certain people will go to any lengths to embarass me and to disrupt my relationship with my daughter."I'm sorry, as everyone who knows me is aware, for losing my temper with my child. I have been driven to the edge by parental alienation for many years now."

Typical frikin' liberal cannot take responsibility for himself! That's a sickening excuse! YOU verbally abused your daughter! No one else! You abused her! Own up to it you yellow-bellied liberal! Pfffffffffffffffffft!

Why does the girl have special status? Do you prefer your female children? Will you participate in the medication of your boys but demur at little precious?
Having raised both, I can tell you that although boys can be louts, girls start calculating the angles while still toddlers.
