Long Road Ahead in Jon Corzine's Recovery

TRENTON, N.J. — It will be agonizing, emotional and draining. Most of all, it will be painful.

New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine faces months of intensive therapy to recover from serious injuries suffered in an April 12 crash on the Garden State Parkway.

"It is a grueling course that he's going to go through," said Kathleen O'Donnell, an inpatient rehabilitation manager at Atlantic Health, which operates several northern New Jersey health facilities. "My heart goes out to him."

Corzine has been in intensive care since breaking 11 ribs, his sternum, a leg, his collarbone and a vertebra in the crash.

Physical therapists said Corzine may face his toughest tests after he leaves the hospital. The 60-year-old man faces excruciating daily exercises designed to rebuild his strength, but they'll also make it difficult for him to initially devote much time to being governor.

"He's got to really work on getting himself stable and up to par," O'Donnell said.

Maybe he should resign. You know the good of the state and all that...

Trust me, its very painful and no piece of cake to get back to where you were before. Rehabilitation therapy takes a lot of perserverance and willpower. It took me months to regain the use of my right arm after I shattered my right elbow in an accident. My thoughts go to Jon Corzine and his family and pray for his recovery.

I highly doubt he will.....But maybe my Governor will understand that seat belt laws are for everyone and he is no exception. His trooper driver was also speeding. At least nobody else was seriously hurt.

I agree that he should resign. He will clearly be unable to carry out the normal duties of his position. On top of that, he did this to himself, through irresponsible and illegal behavior. He chose not to fasten his seatbelt, and allowed (quite likely even encouraged) his state-employee driver to drive way, way over the speed limit, endangering the lives of other people on the road, as well as his own.

He’s lucky to be alive. Even though I’m not a fan, my prayers are with him.

Gee, I hope he has good health insurance.

Well, if he doesn't have health insurance--- "Sicko" Michael Moore could always fly him to Cuba for the "Best Medical Care On Earth".

Most definitely he has a long road ahead of him. In July ‘99 my husband was in a head-on collision (he was stopped signaling to make a left, was rear-ended and pushed into oncoming traffic in the other lane) he broke his knee, below it actually, medically a torn lateral meniscus and fractured tibia. He had surgery consisting of a bone graft, a plate and five screws. Thirteen days in two hospitals, the second for rehab. He was out of work for 8 months (he’s a tile setter, knees required!) on disability, and lots of physical therapy, from crutches to a cane, learning to walk again. Luckily that’s all that happened to him and he WAS wearing his seatbelt. His leg must have been slammed into the door.

So yes, Corzine has a long and painful recovery ahead.

Busted ribs is not fun. I spent a month sleeping upright so I could breathe, and I only fractured 3. This guy has a long recovery ahead of him.

Wonder if he will wear his seat belt from now on?

By the way, I saw the picture of the SUV and did not see either the drivers or passengers air bags deployed. Did they have both of them disabled?

don’t know, some have said possibly the airbags won’t work without the seatbelts...not sure how that works..

I’ve been having a dispute with my sister. She says she heard that Corzine was actually in the back seat. I have understood from the beginning that he was in the front. Can anyone cite a link that verifies it one way or the other? In our state you don’t have to have a seatbelt on if you are in the back seat and over 21.

I predict that Corzine, after he gets out of the hospital, will start a “Wear your seatbelt” campaign and the MSM will call him a hero for it.

Right. The fraud will campaign for tripling the fines for those caught not wearing seatbelts or speeding...

I heard the airbags didn’t deploy because there was no collision to the front of the vehicle. Initial crash was with the white truck, hit the front right fender of his SUV. The collision with the guardrail was also on the right side.

I dunno, my car has side airbags. Wouldn’t you think...for a public official with a security detail...that they’d install side airbags in his car?

I think he will resign. He’s ridiculously wealthy. I think he’ll hire personal therapists and put all his energy toward recovery and getting back what he can of the rest of his life. That’s why I would do.

I know exactly what you’re talking about. I severely injured my wrist in a motorcycle accident in 1988. It took several months of painful therapy to regain use of my left hand and wrist. The really spectacular thing, that most people don’t now about, is how badly muscles atrophy after only a few weeks of complete immobilization, such as Corzine is experiencing right now.
