An Iraqi man accused of being a key aide to Osama bin Laden and a top leader of al-Qaeda was arrested late last year on his way to Iraq and handed over to the CIA, the Pentagon announced yesterday, in what became the first secret overseas detention since President Bush acknowledged the existence of such a program last September.

He spent 15 years in Afghanistan as a trainer and planner beginning in the early 1990s, the Pentagon said. Before leaving his home country to join al-Qaeda's Islamic movement, al-Iraqi served in Saddam Hussein's military, rising to the rank of major.

The officials, who agreed to discuss limited aspects of the case on the condition of anonymity, said as many as five countries provided information that led to al-Iraqi's capture.

BTW, what the heck is meant by "al-Qaeda's 'Islamic movement,'" in which the article refers? al-Qaeda is terrorism, TERRORISM...PERIOD...not some "Islamic movement"!

Now on the other hand, maybe you are serious, but if that's the case, I would only point out to you that the way Al Qaeda sees itself, it is VERY MUCH an Islamist movement.

It is just infuriating. A major terrorist is captured and it raises “worrying questions”? The worrying question is how many more of these animals are still on the loose.

Liberals will say it’s unfair to treat him poorly, deprive him of sleep, and not let him have private conversations with his fellow al Qaeda members. I’m old enough to remember when Liberals squealed about fairness for minorities, the poor, and the mentally deranged. Now, they’re more concerned with fairness for terrorists.

Senators Leahy, Levin, McCain and Obama are on record as wanting Guantanamo closed. So that al-Iraqi and other foreign terrorists captured abroad can be transferred to the USA and afforded the “due process rights” afforded to American citizens in domestic criminal trials. They are reverting to the Clinton approach of treating the war against foreign terror as a law enforcement problem rather than a military conflict. A recipe for disaster. Two of the senators mentioned above would be president. If America is to be secure,they must be defeated.

Al-Qaeda is intent on obtaining a worldwide Islamic Caliphate, run by, of course, al-Qaeda. It uses terrorism as one method to achieve this goal.

U.S. officials would not say where al-Iraqi was captured, but sources ruled out all of Iraq's immediate neighbors, as well as Pakistan and Afghanistan, and said he was not stopped at a border crossing.
