GOP lawmakers favor Fred Thompson for president

AUSTIN — Don't underestimate the political power of stardom, even in the state Capitol.

Fred Thompson, the actor and former U.S. senator from Tennessee, officially is only mulling a race for the White House, but he already has snagged support from at least 58 Texas Republican lawmakers.

No other presidential hopeful from either party is close.

Much of the credit goes to state Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson and Rep. Robert Talton, R-Pasadena, who have been promoting a Thompson candidacy and securing lawmakers' signatures encouraging him to run.

They like him, they say, because he's conservative, independent, well-spoken and comfortable before the camera. And, yes, some backers, including Talton, admit to watching Law and Order, the NBC series on which Thompson plays a district attorney, following several movie roles.

Wow.

“Giuliani, with 24 percent, led a recent independent poll of likely Texas Republican primary voters conducted by Baselice & Associates. Thompson and McCain had 19 percent each.”

Giuliani is toast in Texas.

I think it is truly going to be Thompsons to lose at this point. The biggest danger to him is the advisors and handlers that are always good as screwing things up.

And see him fight terror in Die Hard 2.

He is the real deal. I think being a conservative in Hollywood is an accomplishment in its own right. He has several things going for him. I hope he runs. He is someone I can get excited about. There are so many phonies who are either pretending to be more conservative than they really are or running away from being conservative when convenient. I saw Huckabee on the Bill Mahr show and he was embarrassing. Why can’t a candidate just say they just believe homosexuality is wrong from both a biological and a religious point of view? Then they can go on to say they really don’t hate gays which seems to be a requirement today. Conservatives always apologizing for things they aren’t guilty of but are instead implied by the left.

It's too bad all the Rudybots keep informing that it is too late for Fred to win, he can't raise enough money or get the organization needed to win.

It’s past time for Fred to stop “mulling” and declare his intentions one way or the other

Wow.
Republican voters actually want to vote for a Republican instead of a buncha RINOS.
Whoooda thunk it?

I haven’t taken the time yet to get to know him. Top of my list of considerations will be his position on effectively securing the borders, enforcing our current immigration laws, and using attrition to force illegal aliens to return to their homeland. Absolutely NO form of ‘amnesty’. His position on this issue MUST be the exact opposite of Bush’s or he won’t get my vote.
