Narrows [bridge] tolls for police cars, ambulances [will have to pay tolls to cross]

TACOMA, Wash. — Ambulances, police cars and fire trucks might have to pay tolls when crossing the new Tacoma Narrows bridge. Some Pierce County officials, including Sheriff Paul Pastor and Executive John Ladenburg, are lobbying against the idea. "It is silly to have us pay an admission fee to save lives," Pastor told The Tacoma News Tribune. "I understand they want to pay the bridge debt, but they are, by this policy, creating a far more urgent problem and creating a potentially dangerous situation."

Just tack the toll on to the perp’s bail or the patient’s bill.

Our public masters are aghast at having to pay a bridge toll. They never give a second thought to the rest of us having to do so. If they lived like every one else, they'd understand why nickel and diming the public isn't such a good idea.

What’s wrong with these local officials?

Don’t they realize that these tolls will ofset the carbon emissions of their high performance Police and Emergency vehicles?

C’mon you wankers, it’s for the environment!

that's right!!! I forgot about the swaying bridge that finally collapsed. Was that the Narrows?

I've lived in NW most of my life.

It seems that they have this backwards.

So who provides emergency services on the bridge itself? The local public safety agencies should tack a "public safety impact fee" onto the bridge toll.

Can you imagine an "Oakland" style tanker fire on the bridge? Seems to me the bridge authority would love to have a manned truck full of foam on standby close to the bridge.

Both were called Tacoma Narrows although I don’t know if they both were in the exact same location.
I believe they did finally rebuild in 1950 or so.

in nyc, the cops and others have to pay tolls. we have E-Z Passes in every vehicle so we just drive through. one city agency pays another. nothing new. it’s not like the cops will have to go into their own pockets.

they are available to the general public as well. it’s a great system. just drive through and it is charged to your credit card. if all the booths out there are cash, then that would delay everyone no matter if they were emergency vehicles or not.

Makes as much sense as da gubmint fining a public agengcy.

Transferring funds from one account to another, with the usual bureaucratic skimming in each dirction, covered by a tax increase.

Er, you do understand who will really pay these tolls, don't you?

I see that you have a state income tax in Hawaii. We don't have one here in Washington.

Hey, we live in a tax hell but still pay $3.13/gal. of gas, so far Last time I checked, Port Angeles was $3.27/gal. while gas in Idaho is $2.50/gal. Hawaii is slowly catching up to the taxing policies of the West Coast with the goal of exceeding them. Still, I’ll match your property taxes over Hawaii’s.

It would be interesting to know what State government agencies have "toll free passes" on the new bridge.

I'll wager a steak dinner to a dollar that Chrissy's Limo isn't required to stop, roll down a window (let the air conditioned air out) and pay cash for a toll!!! But she wants "first responders" to pay......

Government Hypocracy Alert"
