Missile defense moves ahead

By John E. Carey

May 1, 2007

On March 23, 1983, President Ronald Reagan announced from the Oval Office, "I've reached a decision which offers a new hope for our children in the 21st century." He explained his vision -- and his defense budget's inclusion -- of the first funds to go toward this nation's missile defense effort.

Liberals, and most of the media, derided the president's project as "star wars." Since 1983, America's Missile Defense effort has become a multinational, multi-system effort: and it has come down to earth and the sea.

Why the left hates a purely defensive system is beyond me.

Good article.

One thing that drives me nuts is how people say we are playing offense by putting up a DEFENSIVE SHIELD. Soviet (Russian ... or are they gonna change the name back now also?) bombers, ICBM redundancy, and submarines ensure second strike capability and when it's one hit KO their deterence is still preserved.

I still get misty-eyed when I remember Reagan’s Funeral. Gorbachev and Thatcher sitting next to one another at the ceremony. Moments like that, and his “Star Wars” program’s forward-thinking sense and power made him one of, if not THE most respected man in my eyes.

Unite a world divided AND save the future from military action ? What a man.

I suppose the argument is that it allows us to act with impunity.

LOL - I’ll show that to daughter - she’ll love it!

Great man, Reagan. Tremendous vision.

We’re lucky he had the courage to start the SDI program enough ahead of time that it would be ready when we need it. Just this morning, I was talking to daughter about “Seward’s Folly” and “Fulton’s Folly”... This will be another example this evening.

Congratulations to all the military and civilians who have had a part in accomplishing this magnificent feat of technological prowess.

That bag will offer you better protection than Star Wars Part Deux. ;)

“Liberals, and most of the media, derided the president’s project as “star wars.””

It was a boondoggle, is a boondoggle, and will be a boondoggle.

Though the people who advised Reagan I doubt had the foresight to see Polish/Czech realty scams as part of the “vision.”

It does? How would YOU propose stopping a thousand ballistic missiles with a dozen? Inquiring engineers and scientists want to know! Something having to do with quantum mechanics, or do you have something even more imaginative up your sleeve?

Sorry for the sarcasm, I may be being a bit hasty... Let me backtrack. Perhaps you aren’t aware of the minor scope and ability of the MD system. A foe such as the Soviets or the Chinese can easily overwhelm the system that is envisioned for at least the next 20 years, so their deterrence is not in danger.

Slow down. The question was how can the left disagree with a defense system. I simply pointed out that the liberal argument agains Reagan’s “Star Wars” missile defense system was that it would allow us to act more aggressively and with impunity. To them, we’re the bad guys you see. Sort of like, the nobility has chain mail and armour so only the peasants get killed. So it’s not FAIR. Try to think like a liberal. LOL

Tom Daschle sounded like an idiot when he called a press conference, shortly after regaining the leadership of the Senate Majority in 2001, and he tried to ridicule supporters of missile defense.

Transcript from Daschle's press conference, in 2001, on the National Missile Defense Program

Whether or not we want to violate the ABM treaty
especially with a concept [NMD program] that we may not know ...or...
that we do know now does not work
is something that also mystifies me.

I mean
Every aspect of the debate and the consideration
that is given this whole program is... is troubling to me.
I... I mean... I...there's a disconnect there.
I mean...It just seems common sense....
I mean...there's no brain..
This isn't rocket science here...

Yes it IS rocket science....
that's the problem.. Hadn't thought about that.. As I just think out loud .... as I meander through here.
(laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh) That's the problem.

The Democrats expect the best from other governments and the worst from ours.
