Senate Dems push through property-tax hike, reject popular vote
Colorado Senate News ^ | 01 May 2007 | Senate Minority Office

In the face of a Republican outcry, Senate Democrats approved a fast-tracked property-tax hike today on most homes and businesses in Colorado, and they refused to put the issue to a statewide vote. It passed as part of the annual School Finance Act on a 19-15 vote, with all Republicans voting in opposition.

The tax hike -- which was pushed by Gov. Bill Ritter and will cost the public $1.7 billion over the next 10 years -- has been the focus of intense debate for weeks and has dominated hallway discussions at the Capitol. Republicans have assailed it not only for raising property tax bills on people of modest means and fixed incomes, but also because it comes with no guarantees its proceeds will go, as promised, toward shoring up the state's school-funding needs.

Republicans also have denounced the way the measure got rammed through -- flouting a state constitutional requirement that all tax hikes be put to a popular vote, while also skirting legislative procedure by dodging a public hearing in the Senate.

Appealing to Democrats this morning to reconsider, Senate GOP chief Andy McElhany, of Colorado Springs, asked why the General Assembly was demanding more from taxpayers when they agreed just over a year ago to open their wallets via Referendum C. McElhany said that measure already is raking in over $1 billion a year above earlier projections.

the duty to highlight a clear example of the dangers of putting Democrats in charge.

This example involves the Democrats’ underhanded scheme and arrogant attack on your pocketbook to appropriate your money into a bloated state budget in the name of “the children.”

“The hallmark of the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights is that taxpayers have the right to vote on tax increases,” Penry said. He noted that the Democrat tax measure will raise the property-tax bill for a typical small business in his Western Slope district from $3,500 to $4,200 and added, “If that’s not a tax increase, I don’t know what is.”

Another attack of socialism. When will the people of this country understand what these pinkos are all about and QUIT VOTING THEM INTO OFFICE.

Get rid of Democrats, get rid of socialism and confiscatory taxation.

Maybe Coloradans will wake up and vote out the Dems the next election. I know, I know, the Dems lied to get into office but the population believed their lies when they should know that that’s what Dems do. They will say anything to get elected.

Colorado has been invaded by illegals who vote in Denver, Boulder... in big numbers. These are ‘safe’ cities for Mexicans, etc.

We are also getting many urban liberals who are fleeing the mess they already created in other states.

Some people are just stupid. Instead of seeing what is before their eyes they have this romantic notion that Democratics stand up for the "under dog."

I know nothing is further from the truth which is why I say some people are just stupid.

Sad really. If one is going to go through life as stupid, one should at least qualify for being the idle rich. That way you can hire loyal servernts who are smart, like Jeeves.

I was going to go look for one with just Jeeves but I like this one, esp. on today.

Ritter is also pandering to the teacher’s union. This will send more money to the union bosses.

With the DNC National Convention, Ritter wants to be liked.

yuk.

Another example of what liberal Dems are willing to do to the public, without remorse, for their own personal political power — which is all they have ever cared about. POWER AT ANY PRICE.

I thought Colorado loved Liberals. If that’s true, what’s the big deal. Liberals sticking it to Liberals should make them all happy.

There'll be a lawsuit in the works. As a Colorado resident, I just can't stand the way the Democrats have flouted the will of the people of this state.

******Get rid of Democrats, get rid of socialism and confiscatory taxation.***

I totally agree. In addition the bill calls for a reduction in funding charter schools. It also raises taxes on people with fixed incomes.

This will go to the courts if there’s any justice because their state charter calls for public input.

VOTE OUT THE DEMOCRATS and SOCIALISM/COMMUNISM.

That is the astonishing thing. Liberals flee from the spending and taxing insanity they vote into every area where they are a majority. Then once they land in their new, lower-tax home, they begin to lobby for stupid spending that they knew once before. Then, of course, the taxes have to be raised to accommodate the wish bucket of "improvements" mandated by the insane liberals.

Like California? We used to live in Denver. One of the most displayed bumper stickers said ‘Don’t Californicate Colorado’. It was a while back, when people still displayed bumper stickers, not magnets.

Many of us in Colorado do not like liberals. This is a recent situation with many liberals moving into the state.

We were much more rural and conservative.

The bait-and-switch backdoor tax hike was rammed through the legislature and soon will be shoved down the throats of Colorado taxpayers - including senior citizens on fixed incomes.

If so then you are merely RENTING "it" from the government..
Have the people in Colorado been DUMBED down that much?..
