Anti-War Democrats Say They Won't Give Up

(CNSNews.com) - While the Israeli people are furious with their prime minister for failing to achieve a conclusive victory in the war with Hizballah, many Americans are furious with President Bush for insisting on victory in the Iraq war.
Democratic congressional leaders are trying to end a war that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid last month described as "lost."
On Wednesday, one day after vetoing a war-funding bill that set a timeline for withdrawing U.S. troops, President Bush planned to meet with congressional leaders to discuss a war-funding bill that both sides can accept.
"Setting a deadline for withdrawal is setting a date for failure," President Bush said on Tuesday. He called it irresponsible: "All the terrorists would have to do is mark their calendars and gather their strength and begin plotting how to overthrow the government and take control of the country of Iraq."
Democrats, effectively branding themselves as the anti-war party, said they'll keep pressing Bush to change course in Iraq.
"If the president thinks by vetoing this bill, he will stop us from working to change the direction of the war in Iraq, he is mistaken," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said on Tuesday.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said, "The president wants a blank check. The Congress is not going to give it to him."
Pelosi and Reid insist they are standing up for the wishes of the American people, who want "benchmarks," "guidelines" and "standards" for measuring progress in Iraq.
Republicans agree that the Iraqi government must "step up and do its part," as House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) put it. "I, like many others, hope to see more out of them (the Iraqis) soon," Boehner said his website.
But Boehner said Congress must produce a spending bill that does not include "surrender dates" or pork barrel spending.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Wednesday admitted there is "bipartisan frustration in the Congress with the Iraqi government."
In an interview on Fox News, McConnell said the Iraqi government needs to pass an oil-revenue sharing law and set up local elections (among other things) "in order to continue to enjoy our confidence." He said those unfulfilled obligations have frustrated President Bush as well.
"And it seems to me that's the place to craft the middle ground here, as we do what we need to do which is get the money to the troops without a withdrawal date."
President Bush's meeting with congressional leaders is scheduled to begin at 2:25 p.m., the White House said.

Nanciip el Osi and Hari Riid are standing up for the wishes of their party, Al Demo Qrati, which is the political arm of Al Qaeda in the US.
It’s funny (sad actually) that these a$$wads will fight so much harder for a US defeat than a victory.
The fact remains we played ‘not to lose’ for two full years in Iraq, and as a result the Democrats gained control of both Houses.
LOL. The president can just keep serving up vetoes until he gets what he wants. The dims don’t have much ground to stand on here considering they can’t override the veto. Nothing but empty posturing on their part.
The catch 22 for the dims is that if they give the president what he wants the base will go ballistic. I am going to enjoy watching the dims eat their own as long as it doesn’t impact the troops in any way.
Why exactly is Feingold in the cartoon? I didnt think he was a major player in this.
I cant help thinking how vile these people are too for screaming now that the president needs to follow the will of the American people. He did that in 2002 and 2003 when every poll showed huge majorities favored invading Iraq, and most Democrats agreed. So if he is wrong to go against the polls now, wasn’t he right to do what the people wanted 4 years ago?? What hypocrites.
Feingold has been shrieking about Iraq since the invasion. I’m pretty sure he voted against it.
Let’s see if I have this right.
The Democrats won’t give up on giving up. Sounds like giving up to me.
The fact remains Republicans stayed home from the polls "to teach them a lesson", and as a result the Democrats gained control of both houses.
Two facts, one yours, one mine, both true.
Hmmm. Were the votes lower in total that previous mid terms, allowing for population shifts? I honestly don’t know.
I just know I didn’t vote for any Republican but Blackwell here in Ohio, primarily due to the refusal to secure the borders, the rediculous amnesty bill, 31,000 earmarks on the previous budget, and that idiot in Alaska insisting we build a bridge to ‘no where’ for millions of dollars.
Oh, and Denny Hastert insisting congress critters charged with felonies were ‘above the law’.
I didn’t ‘stay home’ I voted based on what I witnessed in the last GOP congress.
btw, I also refused to support the Ohio GOP due to the various Taft scandals, lies, and deceit.
Those 3 out of 5 you mention are truly pathetic. I would be willing to bet that they have no concept of what it takes to keep them free.
I took the opposite approach, I voted for every Republican I could, knowing regardless of how disappointed I was, I did not want to see the Democrats win by default.
The Country Club GOP here in Ohio was corrupt to the core, which is why Taft wasn’t forced to resign when he plead guilty to four criminal charges. Add to it the BWC scandal, ‘coingate’ and Bob Ney’s corruption....but thats not what really upset me the most here.
What upset me the most was the overt racist attack ad’s against Ken Blackwell by the old boy networks preferred choice (IE Bob ‘Tax Em!’ Taft’s choice) Jim Petro.
He ran an ad in the primaries statewide showing a Blackwell ‘look alike’ snatching a five year old WHITE CHILD OFF CAMERA - attempting to portray Blackwell as ‘weak on our children’s education’.
I couldn’t BELIEVE IT. I’m still angry about it. I’ve met Blackwell a half dozen times in the past twenty five years or so, voted for him every time I could because he is a bonafide Republican Conservative.
I did the same thing because it was the question of the lesser of the two evils. I am hoping the next election will bring more promising candidates for the pubs. But if not, I will vote straight pub again until they get it right!!! The dems. have really gone over to the dark side many selling their souls to the devil for power. Now they have to pay back soros, code pink, move-on, and every other anti American group and it sure ain’t pretty!
But I did send money to both Blackwell and Mike Steele last year. They are both very impressive men, and the Republican Party at all levels is foolish not to pull out all the stops in supporting such worthy individuals.
