CNN.com 'implies Reagan was insane' Network changes headline after WND exposes 'bias'

Does CNN think President Ronald Reagan was insane?

A headline appearing on its website tonight had some news readers wondering, after the network altered an Associated Press headline.

In a story about a newly published compilation of Reagan's writings, the original AP headline read: "Reagan's wit, humor comes through in detailed diaries."

But on CNN's homepage, the network's altered headline read: "Reagan diary gives new take on insanity."

"It's obvious, they are insinuating Reagan was insane," reacted one WND reader upon seeing the CNN headline. "It's blatant."

The AP article does mention "insanity," in this context:

In an April 1984 entry, he wrote that [his daughter] "Patti screamed & complained so much we took the [Secret Service] detail away at her request." "Now, S.S. went to her & asked if she would accept it for no more than a week until they could get this information out of Lebanon & check the story (about an apparent threat). She said yes. But today's the 4th day & she's screaming again about her invasion of her privacy & last night she abused the agents terribly. I said take them away from her so she's again without protection. Insanity is hereditary. You catch it from your kids."

Some believe the network intenionally took Reagan's joke out of context.

"The bottom line is this," said the WND reader. "It's one short, humorous comment he made, and that's what they focused on because they want to link Reagan and the word insanity. There was no reason to pick one little word from the entire AP article and focus on that for the headline. It's as if they want to equate Reagan with the word 'insanity.'"

In the wake of WND's exposure, CNN.com changed the Reagan headline on its homepage, removing any reference to "insanity." The updated headline read: "Reagan's wit comes through in diaries."

Well, it’s questionably worded, but in all fairness they could be referring to the insanity of the times, and as long as they published the whole joke, its pretty funny.

This kind of tweaking is done constantly...and is rarely exposed.

CNN is despicable as always. And WingNutDaily’s use of “some believe” is an editorializing cop-out. Either name your source or don’t use it.

From the same CNN that gave you the series: “A Broken Government” that ran weeks before the 2006 elections when Congress was up for grabs.

CNN is blatant in their Marxism.

What "insanity of the times"? BTW, Reagan was quoting Sam Levenson.

Well, by Communist News Network standards, he was insane. He didn't want to live in a socialist worker's utopia and his policies helped hasten the demise of CNN's model utopia where dissenters could be put in asylums for daring to oppose their socialist overlords.

God give us more such insanity!

I believe CNN overall has a definite liberal bias. However, in this instance I believe the headline was referring to what Reagan said about insanity being hereditary. I believe some of the WND readers took CNN’s headline out of context.

If you have ever had children, you will not have a problem understanding exactly what President Reagan was saying.

In the article, Reagan was quoted as writing in his diary that there’s a new kind of insanity going asround...you catch it from your kids. This comment was after a row with two of his. The whole BS has been blown way out of proportion. If anyone bothered to read the article, it was easy to see where the article’s title came from. Dumb reaction to a harmless title by the uninformed.
