Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Philip, stepped off a chartered British Airways airplane just after 3 p.m. Thursday in Richmond, Va., signaling the beginning of a six-day American trip. It is her first visit to the United States in 16 years.
The queen stopped at the end of a red carpet while both British and American National Anthems were played. Her motorcade left shortly afterward.
On Thursday evening, she was expected to take a horse-drawn carriage through Colonial Williamsburg.
And while the queen represents a monarchy the United States went to some trouble to get rid of, her visit is prompting excitement and anticipation about the special relationship that exists between the Mother Country and her rebellious child.

I hope they have a very nice time.
re: “rebellious child”
Well we’re hardly the “rebellious child” anymore, even if that phrase might have been attempted 230 years ago...... even then it would have been much resented!
When they play the British national anthem is it OK if we sing “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” to the tune?? :^)
[I read recently that the 19th century clergyman who wrote the lyrics for “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” had no idea of its English association — he found the melody in a German hymnal, according the what I read.......]
What a pretty suit and hat!
...after which she went to Richmond and took a turn around the track in the 20 Car.
Queen visits Richmond ping :-).
Don't be surprised if the Brits respond by singing a couple verses of To Anacreon in Heaven to the tune of a certain other song. :-)
She does clean up nicely, doesn’t she? :)
Elegant lady.
Richmond PING!!!!!
When I saw the HL I thought this was about Rudy.
I’m sure that hat cost the British tax payers plenty.
The Queen is looking very well. I hope to be in as good shape when I’m 80!
She was (in my opinion, as a moderate royal-watcher :-), a reasonably attractive young woman, and looked good until the 1960s and 70’s, when the fashions were ghastly no matter who you were, but really bad for ladies in their 50’s.
Since the Thatcher years, she’s appeared elegant and comfortable again, in outfits that are usually both dignified and flattering.
We were living in the Cayman Islands in the mid 90’s when the Queen came to visit.
They let the kids out of school, and we went downtown where lots of people lined the harbor at Georgetown.
She was so elegant and gracious. She and Prince Phillip came from their yacht to the dock in a little ferry boat and she walked down the street toward a church where they were going to have a service. She waved a lot and greeted the children that were lining the streets.
If the British taxpayers don’t want royal window-dressing, as it were, they can privatize them. The Windsors have their own money, too.
She is so classy. I love her hats.
I could wear that one on Sunday, with my pink shirt-dress, 3/4 sleeves.
