Concerns about Sen. Barack Obama's safety that led to him getting a Secret Service detail "had a lot to do with race," Sen. Dick Durbin said Friday.
"I wished we lived in a country where that is not a problem, but it still is," Durbin said. "The fact that Barack Obama is such a highly visible African-American candidate, I think increases his vulnerability."
Obama, vying to become America's first black president, received his Secret Service protection Thursday. It was earlier than any other presidential candidate, excluding Hillary Clinton, who is protected as a former first lady.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in Chicago for Rep. Jan Schakowsky's Ultimate Women's Power Lunch at the Chicago Hilton, was on the panel that recommended Obama be guarded by federal agents.
"I would just say this -- the bipartisan leadership committee that makes this decision, it didn't take long to decide that it would be important for Sen. Obama to have this security," Pelosi said.
The country's first female House speaker, flanked by Secret Service agents, said she couldn't share details, but added: "Suffice to say that it was self-evident that Sen. Obama attracts a great deal of attention wherever he goes, so it was thought, under those circumstances, that he should have" it.

sincerely hope you’re right. but, i still get the feeling (deeply visceral) that hillary! is going to win the whole ball of wax along with both houses of congress to the rats. (i think that democrat indoctrination has been successful and the number of rat voters is nudging past fifty percent....sorry to be a naysayer)

She wouldn’t have ever been elected to anything if she had ran against anyone but stupidity in a glass, Rooty.
I know for a fact that a Senator who was running against Billy Jeff in the 1992 primary had such protection, for himself and his family... Maybe primary opponents only get such protection when they are running against a Clinton. The facts are not inconsistent with that conclusion.
An Irish American Senator, who is a former Navy Seal, got the same protection in '92 when running against Billy Jeff. Didn't need it, SEALS take care of their own, but he got it.
Rumors don't count. Thompson has no protection now, but if he declares, then he will. If J.C. Watts were to declare, he too would get protection.
Even though the 'Rats would like to make it about race, the SS does not.
In 1996 and 2000, Alan Keyes never received SS protection.
In fact, his 3rd place finish in Iowa in 2000 made him one of the “frontrunners.”

Osamma Obamma Yomamma has SS protection far earlier than anyone who has ever ran for POTUS. They normally don’t get it until they get the nomination.
But he’s only half black. So he only needs half an SS agent.
